You guys know those damn brochure things they have at really touristy hotels and "welcome centers" in cities all over the globe? You know the ones that have all the colors, bold print, that have something to do on every type of day, every season and has something for essentially every personality (the adventurous, the athletic, the scholarly or the Artistic), that covers about 95% of the population?

In essence every holy text, from whatever religion you can think of is essentially is just that...It is just one giant sales pitch that covers, literally hundreds of scenarios, and is aimed at nearly every kind of person that exists. These "holy texts" have been worked and reworked over thousands of years, either on paper, via word of mouth or "interpreted" to mean whatever the priest, Imam, Profit, cleric, friar, deacon, etc., is trying to "sell" to their audience. If these "holy individuals" need to explain or relate pretty much any topic or scenario, all they must have is a general knowledge of the "ancient texts" and can in essence rationalize pretty much any beautiful or horrific scenario/action you could possibly imagine. They also have "catch all" passages/phrases that answer for when the main texts make no sense, or are blatantly wrong historically factual. Things that were once deemed "historically accurate", are now deemed allegory.

These texts often contradict each other and allow for anyone to interpret them how they see fit. Just as the brochures at the hotel, the different passages are aimed at different groups, whether it be conservative, progressive, moderates and extremists. There is a little something for everybody, whether it's the KKK, Al-Qeada (or the like), the "christian coalition".

These books are used to ultimately used to spread...or rather "sell" their religion to pretty much any type of person imaginable. But ultimately, just like someone who is duped into buying that timeshare or something else that appears shiny and new...the people who are targeted are for the most part uneducated, poor, disadvantaged, unemployed, etc. Generally people who, typically are branded "down on their luck", either financially, mentally, physically or emotionally. They are the ones who typically fall victim to their sales pitches since they can be easily be strayed by sales techniques that have been perfected over many millennium. But it ultimately preys on most everyone's largest fear...the fear of death. And in some extreme cases, causes individuals to ignore their natural survival instinct and embrace death for a cause.

But the lady in the clip is pretty much spot on...but she leaves out the point about the lack of hope and crazy levels of poverty that most "extremists", are bred from. "Give someone something to live for, and they are less likely willing to die for something other than that which is most dear" (someone said something along those lines at some point...can't recall who though).

The First Crusade was started by the Western powers in an attempt to capture Jerusalem (despite that it had otherwise and traditionally been open to people of all religions, including Jews).
