Long story short:
Marching under a load causes you to sweat a lot, and the sweat causes any moderately tight clothing to stick and bunch up. And so you remove underwear and undershirts and such so that there's less stuff to bind and rub against you, and so you don't get chafed and get all swollen and infected.
