We have several government agencies that hire my company’s services to install equipment that is used in communication surveillance and interception.

oh i know mate...i wasnt saying its not done..
just saying what our govt supposedly says is done.

Like i said, my brother works for the AFP and is a fed, worked at Jakarta for the Australian embassy in charge of security. They did alot of spying there...and its not even our country. Spied on alot of Aussies on holidays over there..

lets not get into hacking/cracking of codes/ or any ILLEGAL shit here ok?
this is not allowed for discussion.

were talking about tapping that is done 'supposedly legally' by govts etc..

otherwise this will have to be locked, can not condone criminal activity.

i think of it this way---my cell phone, laptop or home pc could be tapped at anytime.

Kanzen had a nice thread on this shit awhile back. I'll find it and add it here.

NOTE: Encryption of mobile phone calls isn't for the privacy of the callers it is simply comes back to a bandwidth issue.

The encoding of the digital signal may not be military grade but it's still done using a proprietary method that no off-the-shelf scanner or software is going to be able to untangle. You'll be listening to what sounds like static at best. Then you also have the fact, as I said before, that listening to any individual phone or tower is going to be pretty much useless. You're going to need to intercept the data stream at a place where it's going to be steadily delivered. Just where that is or if it can be done over the airwaves, I do not know.

can. I had a neighbor who was a ham operator who used to do it, and I heard it myself.

I'm confused as to what you're asking Jeff, are you questioning whether cellphone conversations can intercepted by wiretappers, or whether HAM radio equipment is and effective way of cellphone tapping?

The answer is definitely "YES" to the first, and most certainly "NO" to the second. I'm not necessarly saying it can't be done with HAM, but it won't be terribly effective either

I'm asking if they can be tapped, and I should be more specific and say that my idea of "tapping" a cellphone means one would have to be able to hear the entire conversation from start to finish even as the phone(s) being listened to made us of multiple towers as the useres moved around.

A HAM may be able to track it and even listen to intelligible conversations, but again, it's ineffective for him to do so because the transmit range of the towers is relatively small, so before long, whoevere he's listening to is going to be using a tower that is no longer near him and which he can't listen to.

You can conference call on cellphones, and a service to simultaniously ring multiple cellphones is available. Transfering a signal between towers isn't a issue either, that's the whole principal behind cellular communication.
