Yes well the game couldn't have got much closer. Australia wasn't one of the top ranked teams this year even though they were defending champs. The English managed to win the entire comp with only one try (which they scored in the final).
The Aussies put up a fantastic fight but the magic boot of Wilkinson managed to bring it home for the English. Its the first international comp that England has won since 1966!!
No fear the Aussies will be back with a vengence in the next world cup no doubt about it ...

DVS what were you watching? England played 7 games to win the cup and scored a total of 36 tries (including the penalty try against Samoa). The stats are for each opponent played: SA 1 try (25 - 6 to England); Georgia 12 tries (84 - 6); Samoa 4 (including the penalty try in a 35 - 22 win to England and possibly our worst performance); Uraguay 17 tries (111 - 13); Wales 1 try (28 - 17); France 0 tries (24 - 7) and Australia (as we all know) 1 try and the result? An enormous shooing for the Strine bastards who, in the week before the match could not find one gracious thing to say about us Poms and whose very own bloody prime minister couldn't raise a smile while dishing out the medals. Shame on them and shame on DVS for being so wrong.

briesmith: It seems that you have misunderstood what I said. I said that the POMEs (Prisoner of Mother England) won the comp with one try - being the try in the final.
I would like to see what the English team could do if Wilkinson was not able to play (??)...

You're talking out of your down under. S Africa won the final with a drop goal in the previous World Cup and Australia would do the same if they had the personnel. I don't need to remind anyone that in two finals England have been royally buggered about by poor refereeing. In '91 we had the dreadful decision not to award a penalty try against Campesi for a deliberate knock-on - which, had it been given, would have given us the cup and not you Aussies - and in '03 we had a referee who was clearly and unarguably biased against us Poms. His behaviour in the closing minutes of normal time was simply weird. I wonder if he had been speaking to good old Warnie; that well known honest face of professional Australian sport?

ooooh! sounds a bit spitefull mate. True, We aussies did not have the team that we should have! our form was questioned even by myself, a true suporter. However if Wilkinson had not been on the case, it would have been a totaly different story. Refs opinions usualy balance out. The success was in what the cup did and always will do for the game!

End of the day we won it, just roll about in the satisfaction that we are the worlds no. 1's.
One other thing, ya cant play and win a world cup with one player. So stop with the bollocks that we wouldnt have won it without Wilkinson. Its a 15 man team game.

Trust a POME to have winge.
The refs are against us

I said it before and I will say it again - without Wilkinson England would have fallen to S/Africa, New Zealand or the Australians.
