From what I researched, the officers are not part of the legion. They are attached to legion of course, but they are officers from the French regular forces, who command the FFL troops.
As well, when you join you get a new name and identity papers. After five years, you have two choices with respect to your identity. 1 - go back to your old name before joining, or 2 - keep the FFL name that was provided for you and continue life fresh.
The FFL are truely dedicated to not allowing anyone access to it's personnel regarding previous lives. You are wrapped in an invisible blanket with them, but of course with the expectation that you will most likely die before your five years are completed.
Basic training is done with live fire, and the training is very hands-on. Hazing is at a whole other level with them from what I have heard.

of course, they never use blank cartridges, and training is under real fire..but you learn it faster

about hazing, well, its no band camp

i respect all member of the rangers, seals, sas, speznas, ksk and so on ..but believe me or not, the members of the 2rep. are the best trained soldiers in the world, and get shown respect wherever they are.
for example, ivory coast..at first there was regular french army there, a lot european people get killed, 2 hours after 2.rep landed , the riots where over. they have seen the green berets and run away

* wonders why..*
