powerflux, that just shows how the news can be distorted. in this country the president has no such power. he didn't even hint that he was even going to try or had any plans do do any such thing. some day soon, we will both be able to marry the girls of our choice.
but i just heard him saying that
maybe he hasn't done it, but he is going to!
(i'm happy i live in europe..)

powerflux, george bush is the president not the king. he made a statement on the issue and did not even say he was against gay marriages. he has no power to do things like that even if he wanted to.
Ya gotta love a democracy!!! Still, it isn't as 'land of the free' as people are led to believe.
ok.. now i can breathe again.. feeling better now..

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) endorsed a constitutional amendment on Tuesday that would ban gay marriage as he leaped into a contentious issue that could energize his conservative base for the November election. The Republican president expressed alarm at events in San Francisco, where marriage licenses have been issued to gays and lesbians, and in Massachusetts, where the state's highest court ruled gay couples have the right to wed.
"If we are to prevent the meaning of marriage from being changed forever, our nation must enact a constitutional amendment to protect marriage in America," Bush said.
His appearance in the White House Roosevelt Room came a day after Bush abandoned his above-the-fray position and opened a campaign attack on Democrat John Kerry (news - web sites), who is running to challenge Bush in the general election.
Same-sex marriage has become a hot-button issue in this presidential election year, with opponents saying it would destroy the institution of marriage. Proponents say gays should have the same rights as others to marry and that an amendment would enshrine discrimination in the Constitution.
Bush called for an amendment "defining and protecting marriage as a union of a man and woman, as husband and wife."
But he left the door open to states to provide homosexual civil unions and other legal arrangements for the gay community.
Elaborating on this theme, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said these could include hospital visitation rights, insurance benefits and civil unions.
Amending the U.S. Constitution is a difficult task. It can take years to win the support of two-thirds of the House of Representatives, two-thirds of the Senate and ratification by three-quarters of the 50 U.S. states.

the supreme court will first take the case, probably next year, to decide if any ban on same sex marriages is constitutianal. if the court decides a ban is unconstitutional it will take many years for an amendment to pass and become law. it is unlikely the united states will continue to exist as we know it for that to ever happen.
