Dude, do you read any electronic websites? They had PS3s die on launch day. Something like 45 minutes into gameplay. And they have just as many failures as the 360.
Don't get me wrong, most PS3s are probably fine (as are most 360s) just kind of depends on how unlucky you happen to be when you grab whatever console it is you want to buy.
Now, to give my opinion on the question asked:
I'd suggest a 360 or a Wii (if you can find one)
The PS3s have had such a high return rate that they aren't worth it at this time. Not that the consoles were broken, its just that the original purchasers didn't enjoy it (reasonable speculation based on the launch events and recent actions.) My friends and I went shopping less than a week after launch date looking for stuff and the Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop, and local ass retail store we went to all had PS3s in stock, with about half having being opened and returned.
The PS3 includes a blue-ray player, which is neat but unnecessary especially since the HD format war is still in a full-fledged slightly uneventful and remarkably boring battle. And it is expected to have about a 100USD price drop shortly.
But really, I suggest that you research it on your own. You should look into going to a gaming center and purchasing time with each system to get some game time going and see what you enjoy.
