I'm assuming you're talking about too many prcesses loading at startup..

This program works well, I think. Easier that having to manually kill the processses.

Ascaris's post is good for stopping processes temporarily.

To disable them from running at startup

Click Start --> Run --> Type in msconfig

That brings up the System Configuration Utility

Click the Startup Tab

Uncheck the ones you dont want to run at startup ( I recommend googling the ones your not sure of to find out what they are first)

I usually remove them directly from the register. msconfig is a pretty good tool for doing that.

Uhm... Sorry to barge in like this, but is this an XP only command or something? I've tried it as well, and msconfig cannot be found on my W2K machines...

Hmm, I'm pretty sure it's XP only. I once tried it on W2K machine and it couldn't find the command.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You should find the same information from there too.

If it's startup stuff you're after you can find a couple of utilities here: http://www.mlin.net/

If it's processes you're worried about try the sysinternals website, more specifically here: http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndThreadsUtilities.html and look for Process Explorer (currently v10.2).

Both are freeware, easy to use and will run on most Windows operating systems post 98.

If you don't have msconfig, you can get it here. It works with 2000.
