I don't know about older films getting today right but current futuristic films certainly don't.
Just watched "28 Days Later" - total crap - and "Reign of Fire" is even worse. The storylines are ludicrous, the script bears no relation to what's going on and the actors roles are detached from what's allegedly going on all around them.
It's a bit like in Predator where people are dropping like flies and all the main characters want to do is fight with each other; fuck the monster!. And of course, nobody asks the girl the relevant question like "what the fuck is going on?"
In "28 Days Later" the main character wakes up after 28 days in a coma, wanders out of the hospital and around most of central London saying "hello". The absence of people, traffic, noise etc does not trouble him apparently. No dribbling, drooling panic, for example. When he bumps into some other people - and encounters the zombies for the first time - he doesn't insist they tell him everything they know "otherwise I'm not going another step". No, he gets involved with the inter-personal politics of the group he's stumbled across.
In "Reign of Fire" dragons apparently take over the world, wiping out most of the population. The fact that these are just flesh and blood flying things - and can be wiped out themselves if you just kill the male! - didn't prevent them from taking on man in his tanks, aircraft, submarines, warships and so on. When nukes were tried they, of course, only destroyed us.
Drama depends on suspension of belief but most sci fi/futuristic films let their director's political agenda get in the way of telling a believable story in a believable way albeit with a tolerable amount of suspension.
Does anybody think they made a single worthwile StarTrek movie? Or that after the burn em up Alien I and II that the others were worth watching? Same with Predator II; took a good idea and fucked it up completely. Terminator II is OK though and possibly that rarest of rarities; a sequel that outplays its prequel.
Armageddon/Deep Impact were good movies with excellent production values, cast, script and were based on reasonbly accurate "good" science but why in one of them - I can never remember which - were the shuttles armed? Just to provide a good scene for Steven Buscemi?
Apart from the hair dryers I think Forbidden Planet was probably one of the only genuinely thoughtful sci fi films that tried to get things right in terms of applying then current knowledge and thinking to a futuristic theme. And that's probably because Shakespeare wrote the story.

From PCXL August 99 Issue:
(Fade in to ship's main deck)
CAPTIAN SOMETHING OR OTHER: Smith, we've lost contact with those cheesy-looking puppet aliens we're supposed to be afraid of. If we don't find them, I fear this whole movie will be one giant cliche.
SMITH: I'll find them sir...
MISS HARD-ASS [who is later revealed as the token love interest (played by a semi-butch looking actress with no acting skills)]: ...shutup Smith. I've forgotten more cliche dialogue than you'll ever learn. Let's go.
TOKEN MINORITY [played by unknown minority actress who actually seems really, really white]: I'll lead the unit in, even though I'm quite aware that minority actors/actresses have very little chance of surviving any sci-fi movie. Oh, by the way, I love you Captain. (Much sobbing ensues, camera follows Token Minority to unknown CG Planet)
TOKEN MINORITY: Aaaahh, splat -- crash, blam.
CAPTAIN: Damn, now there's no chance of nudity.
MISS HARD-ASS: Don't worry Captain, I'm about to show my soft underbelly as I jump naked onto those freaky looking pppets. If you get the DVD version, my right nipple will be fully visible when paused.
CAPTAIN: Noooooooo!
SMITH: Captain, I did catch some nip there and besides, she's distracted their tractor beans and now we've won.
CAPTAIN: Let's have a celebration and roll the damn credits.
