I soldered a chip in mine a few years ago. I don't remember the specifics, but it was fairly easy - EXCEPT for one wire that solders onto the back of the board. I think it was always called the D0. That was a bitch. the traces back there are VERY close together and you need to solder the wire onto a point that is smaller than a pin head.

I did mine ok, then totally fucked up and ruined my brother in laws xbox. I couldn't get the D0 soldered on and I over heated everything and the trace lifted off the board. Ruined.

I also upgraded my HD while I was in there. I upgraded from an 8 gig to a 20 gig. I can hold maybe 5 or 6 ripped games on it. There is software available that handles the partitioning of the drive and loading the OS.

The hard part about the upgrade was finding the software. at the time you needed to log into an ftp server with a password that you got from who remembers where.

I ran linux for a time on it. There was an adapter you could get from microsoft that would allow you to plug a keyboard into one of the expansion slots on the controller. it was cool.

The chip has a switch on it that gets mounted outside the xbox and allows you to turn the chip on or off.

Sorry for the lack of specific detail, but it was many years ago I did this.

No, it's cool. I appreciate you detailing out what you do remember. Most of this whole process seems pretty easy, it's just that there are like 100 guides I've looked through, and just about each one mentions a different method. They might share some characteristics with other guides, but another part of it is completely different.
