Except, I don't know which one? I recently acquired (*ahem*) the first half of the movie Underworld. It's in X-Vid and has crystal clear image, but it says I don't have the right codec to play the audio. It says something along the lines of tag(2000). The file itself is listed: Underworld_(2003).CD1.AC3.DEiTY.ShareReactor.avi Perhaps somebody can tell me from just the title what audio codec is needed?

You can get your AC3 filters from here (tag2000) http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ohdoom/Files/tag2000audio.exe

Although this may not solve your problem. I installed the KLITE codec pack a while ago and since I have had no problems playing anything... this includes the AC3 filters, get that from here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Or you can install the WMP9 codec pack, which everyone should already have who uses the player from here... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06fcaab7-dcc9-466b-b0c4-04db144bb601&DisplayLang=en

Again though I have to say to be very careful about how many codecs you are installing, too many will stop you from playing anything. If this happens, uninstall the codec, reboot and try a different combination. I have just the klite pack installed and all works well for me (Im using BSplayer)... although it may not be the same for you depending on how many codecs you already have installed.

Hope this helps

It's probably encoded with AC3 sound. AC3 is the most common audio format on DVD movies. It's also known as Dolby Digital.
AC3 sound will not normally play on Windows Media Player (nor will DVD movies). But there is probably a workaround. I don't think AC3 is free, but try searching for it [Edit: or look in the post above]

AC3 is both free and will play on Windows Media aslong as you have the filters installed. Windows media will also play DVD movies if your system is capable of it. ie a DVD-ROM and the correct codecs installed. It will also play individual VOB files.
