I use Ubuntu on my notebook, and I like it.
I have found it to be really good for new users.
The one problem with moving to Linux is finding Linux equivalents for the myriad of windows apps you use.

I found this article useful http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-10.04-lucid-lynx

keep us updated on how you get on.

How you managing with Linux RD?

I can't give you any gen on Gentoo, I stuck with Ubuntu myself buy linux generally requires a lower spec machine than micro$oft products.

Feedback is always usefull.

I've got Ubuntu installed on an old PC. It's more of a hobby for me than anything but I do like it. I use OS X for my daily computing but I definitely like Linux over Windows.

Linux is a simple trouble free OS. It's much easier to use once you get used to it than windows and is by far much less resource dependant. What that means is that it allows the machine to run uncluttered with background crap that Windows is notorious for using. You machine runs faster and safer, as most viruses are Windows based.
It updates easily, uses Firefox instead of IE as its browser; generally its a much more stable, faster OS. I have a Mac, Run Windows 7 and Vista on machines. My Linux platform laptop has been the most worry-free machine. Only complaint is the software. If developers wrote a Linux program for each Windows/Mac software they wrote, Linux would dominate....

uhh i hate Ubuntu.

been using Linux since 1995, only used windows to play certain games. ran an ftp server for kicks for a few years - 68 pin ultra wide SCSI drives.

10 commands for common user
20+ for a power user
complete command ref book is roughly 2.5 inches thick
you can do anything you want with Linux.

you can even .... errr never mind

happy learning & welcome to the world of Linux finally.

Ubuntu is debian based so, if you can't find your answer for (commands) in Ubuntu forums i would suggest looking it up for a debian machine. One of the major ideas behind Linux is GNU ( free ) Ubuntu offers pay for crap stuff.. if i wanted to outright pay for somehing rather then be nice and make a "donation" i might have started off yrs ago with a diff distro. I actually have no idea how Ubuntu is easier to learn for a Windows user. I would suggest burning several distros in "live cd" and actually use them for a few weeks each - before you go all ballsy & install it to your hdd. Personally - i run Fedora - its cutting edge linux
