If you go out and buy a new computer, make sure you have a copy of XP Professional or Media Center lying around first. If not, then go buy one. You can get XP Pro or Media Center, OEM - not "upgrade", for discounted prices from reputable companies on the internet. Home Edition XP sucks.

Chances are, major computer manufacturers such as Dell and HP, have XP drivers for new computers that come shipped with Vista.

Keep your Vista disk that came with your new computer around and install Vista probably a year from now because it's quite clear that Vista is not ready for prime-time.

Any of you folks try or using Vista? What's your take on it?

I use XP Home. There's nothing wrong with it.

Vista sucks. I managed to have it up and running, but I had to manually install the drivers for several hardware parts. This page has helped me a lot:

Tried it to see what the hype was about, rebooted and smiled when Linux came back up. Thank god I only gave it a couple gigs to see what it was like instead of starting from nothing.

I'll stick with XP pro. No need to switch to Vista til the bugs are worked out, and at least one service pack is released.

My new laptop came with Vista, so I didn't have much of a choice.

While there are a lot of shitty/annoying things about it, they are mostly related to conflicts and bugs that I'm sure they will fix.

But there is plenty to be happy about...the new interface is sleek as hell, and way nicer looking than MacOS (sorry!). The new integrated search feature is a big "why didnt they do this before" and helps. I also like that you can permanently assign ICC profiles to different monitors (I use an additional monitor, to the laptop screen), so that you don't have to restart the computer everytime you come back from sleep or disconnect the monitor, in order to get the right profile to work.

Hopefully there will be more fixes out soon.

There was never a doubt in my mind that I would be sticking with Mac OS X. I will never go back to win-doze. Why take a step backwards? That's just me though. Different strokes, different folks.

Out of the box, you need to do an msconfig and remove Defender from startup just to do anything. It's more than condescending that the OS assumes the user can't manage their own spyware/ AV problems. My next upgrade will be to a Mac.

I think it's funny that Mac and Linux users bash windows xp for having security problems, and then when Microsoft actually does something to address those issues they are being condescending.

As someone who works in the IT industry, it is not condescending to assume that the user can't manage. The average user is completly helpless. It's like they just wonder around clicking on random shit. Macs and Linux appears to be immune to attack, however the truth of the matter is that people that write viruses don't want to waste their time coding to harm the 2% of the population that aren't using Windows.

But I digress... I won't be upgrading to Vista for a while. I installed it on a separate partition on my work laptop for testing purposes, and everything seems to be working great. However, there are a few third party programs that I use at work that have not released compatability updates yet. I'm looking forward to it though.

P.S. I don't work for Microsoft...
