I say you can update your old computer and buy/ "borrow" a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate because with Ultimate you have the capability to run older programs in XP-Mode that are designed for use with XP only. Keep in mind though, if you do want to upgrade your old computer from XP to W7U you are forced to do a fresh new install of W7U as if the computer had just came outta the box.
You can only make an upgrade if:
- You already have a previous version of Vista OR W7. If upgrading from Vista to W7 you can ONLY do an upgrade to the equivalent version of W7 OR upgrade from any previous version of W7-to-W7U.
(I.E. - Vista Professional --> upgrades to --> W7 Professional // W7 Professional --> upgrades to --> W7 Ultimate, you CANNOT upgrade from something like Vista Home Premium-to-W7U cuz you'd need to do a fresh new install).
- Also, regardless of the OS version upgrade you are doing... if the system message reads that the OS needs a fresh new install that IT WILL WIPE YOUR ENTIRE FUCKING HD COMPLETELY CLEAN and you'll lose everything!! So have a 2nd backup like a 250GB-500GB external HD that you can copy your stuff to and then again copy your stuff from the external HD back to the same HD/ new internal laptop HD. I'm wary of using a HD cloning program cuz something or a bunch of things never get saved so I use the copy from internal laptop HD --> external HD --> internal HD method.
I actually have a 7 year old Toshiba A105-S4094 laptop that originally had XP on it that was installed from the manufacturer. I've had it for so long that Vista nor x64/ 64 bit laptops weren't even a Microsoft wet-dream yet. Then Vista & x64 came out, so I waited a while until W7 came out and saw what W7 Ultimate had to offer so I did a fresh new install to Ultimate directly from XP with ease... via my 500GB external HD. Beside that, I installed a total of 4GB's of RAM (cuz my laptop is only x86/ 32 bit capable) as well as 2 fresh, new virtual machines onto my HD with a program called XP-More with each VM allocated with about 1.5 GB of RAM. I have one VM assigned as the original XP, while the other one is assigned as Windows 7 Enterprise. (You can potentially duplicate 1 VM and assign each VM with different RAM sizes with XP-More). The XP-Mode program to create VM's (Microsoft says) IS built into W7U but you still have to download it from Microsoft because it's not already installed. That's Microsoft bullshit for ya though. W7U is really built to handle and successfully run XP-Mode right outta the box, while the other W7 versions aren't because you didn't pay enough money for the OS to have that capability unlocked (I.E. - W7 Home Premium & W7 Professional).
Download the XP-Mode program here:

Download the VM easy duplicator here:

If you want, you CAN buy a new laptop but if you go that route I would suggest that you buy one with an x64/ 64 bit processor that comes with a small amount of RAM built inside the laptop. Buying a laptop with a small amount of factory-installed RAM is because (granted you have W7U and a capable laptop) you can buy and self-install a stick(s) of a RAM totaling roughly 4GB-16GB's and the x64 laptop will successfully recognize more than 4GB's of RAM you'll be able to speed through your computer at light-year speed!
A great, reputable place to buy desktop & laptop RAM:

As far as your current laptop being encrypted goes... YES, that will cause an issue if you are trying to clone that HD because that HD will have to be UNencrypted. It'll be a read/write error, but probably mostly read error I'm sure.
Oh, and XP still is the shit OS... so badass! I still play my classic 3.5" floppy disc Windows DOS version of Oregon Trail on my USB floppy disc reader through the use of XP-Mode on my W7 Ultimate 7 year old laptop!

Hope some of this helps!
P.S. - Another cool thing that W7U has when you install it is a built-in Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard, Sound Recorder, and Speech Recognition Tool! I love the speech recognition one cuz it's Microsoft's version of that $100 & $200 (for Home & Premium versions respectively) Dragon Naturally Speaking program from the boob tube commercials where you can talk to your computer and it writes for you!
