I read that you can still transfer hpv even with a condom on, but it's less likely. Not sure if anyone has heard this too

Condoms are not 100% protection against anything. But they are better than nothing and are much better than any other form of protection when used properly.

A key factor in fighting HPV or any other nasty bug is strengthen ones immune system. Elderberry, Wolfsberry, Beta Glucan, Suma, Neem............if taken correctly, can help keep an immune system functioning at its peak.

Are you fucking retarded? a single EXPOSURE to an STD means it will stick with you for life. Pretty irresponsible to tout that shit around and think you know what you're talking about. The second part is true (ish), the first part is entirely false. To imply that having a PERFECT immune system will make you IMMUNE to an STD is very reckless and completely untrue.

As for the OP's question. A condom is by far the best way to prevent an STD. However, there are several things you have to worry about:

1. A virus is tiny and can penetrate even a microscopic imperfection or tear in a condom
2. Sex is dirty... your dick isn't the only thing that gets vaginal fluid on it

Hell, even having an area that was slightly raw in a skin fold on your groin is an entry site for bugs, including any STD. Immune system doesn't matter, it's the luck of the draw. Hepatitis C is a great example. Some people may not even recognize their contact with it as foreign, so no matter how good their immune system, it won't even see the threat to be able to attack it. These people become carriers, since hepatitis c is actually manifested by your body's immune response - it attacks your liver cells that carry the viral marker.

HPV - as last I checked, there is no test out there for men. I also read a study suggesting it may be linked to throat cancer in males. I know several women who've got different strains of HPV and some of them don't even realize it's an STD... so if you're the responsible type (which you should always be), ask up front of they've ever had an STD but ALSO be sure to ask if they've got HPV. I have absolutely no problem asking a girl this before I sleep with her... then again I've never picked up a one night stand in a bar, and I never will.

If you're sleeping with someone who has an STD, you should at the very least use a condom. Second, you should abstain from sex with another partner until you've been tested. Again, however, males can't be tested for HPV.

I don't care how hot and in the mood I was, I'd never sleep with a girl if I knew she had any sort of STD, curable or not.

My advice is:
1. Always use a condom before you know for sure, simply because it's better than not
2. Get to know the girl before you sleep with her... and ask her

Dakkon76 is completely right. I'm a Ph.D student in microbiology. Everyone should follow his/her advice. Thank you D76 for sound advice.

They currently have a vaccine for women to prevent a number of strains of HPV, so that's nice.

The serious response has already been said, but just to give a quick cliffs notes version, yeah, you can still catch just about anything despite using a condom. (The HIV virus is about .1 micrometers in size, whereas a sperm cell is more like 3 microns...or 30x smaller....condoms sole purpose is to prevent the passage of sperm cells to the female...anything else is just gravy)

That being said, female-to-male transmission rates are lower than male-to-female transmission rates, so at least you have that going for you, which is nice.

Sweet, my already extreme fear of STD's just got scarier.

Highfive.

Well, they help a lot. Sort of like an umbrella. You don't get really wet, but if it's really windy, you might get a bit wet. But using one is still better than not. Except for that whole rubber-desensitizer-on-your-dick thing.

So they're certainly not useless.

It's just, unlike me, they're not perfect.

You seem like YOU don't work in the health care profession. HPV and its vaccine are a ploy of big pharma. READ...Dr. Mercola.
The body's immune systems fights of nastier bugs 24/7 everyday YOU take a breath. 100x worse than HPV.

BTW-----DON'T use the term retarded -it's an archaic term like your thinking.
