Home Networking with Vista and XP

I am trying to set up a small home network with a new Vista box and an XP box. The XP connects via wireless and the Vista is plugged straight into the DLink Wireless Router which is then plugged into the Cable 'modem'. Both boxes can see the DLink Wireless Router but they can't see each other. I need to share some files between the boxes. They both belong to the same workgroup. That was the first thing I tried. Anyone have any ideas?

What version of XP and Vista are you running?

the Vista is the basic Home version and I believe that it is XP Home edition as well.

What kind of files are they? If you have Media Center XP its fairly easy for Audio / Video files.

they are for QuickBooks. My biggest problem is getting the two boxes to see each other. Once that is done, the rest is easy

Try the wireless network setup wizard with the Vista comp and a pen drive

Okay, couple of questions. The first few will seem stupid, but just like T/S I need a baseline.

1. Can either box see the outside world?
2. Can you ping each machine from the other and get a reply?
3. By default XP has netbios turned off, are you trying to see the other machine via host name or IP?
4. Have you turned on file & print sharing?
5. Have you shared out the folder you are trying to see if it isn't in your "My Shared Folder"?

I haven't done Vista yet... However, if file sharing is similar, try creating the user name you are using to log in on the xp machine, on the vista machine. Then, create the vista login you are using, on your xp machine. Make sense? Don't forget to match the passwords as well.

Just fired up the Vista box I built a while back and all I did was create a new user (admin rights) then brought up the new acct, hit start button, clicked on new user name (like My Docs in xp), double clicked on documents and at the top of the window was a "Share" button. select that, set up permissions (I didn't choose a user name i.e. blank) and chose to share. It finished the wizard.

I went to my xp box, selected run, \\192.168.0.15...and bingo, there was my shared folder (not grayed out).

Simple as that Yellow.

Archangel, if you are referring to me (Ev1l) the answer is no. The system I have this on is merely a test system on my private net.

I have xp pro, basic vista and 2 home xp (using the same key) plus a 98 system that I turn on for shits and giggles sometimes and i have to say the the vista(lap top) was easy on me even my printer set up with no problems guess their is a first time for everything. File sharing is smooth only thing I don’t like is vista likes looking around for media on my other systems automatically.
