Hello all

I am currently studying an ACITP course with the LEarning Library. I need to build a computer, so I am going to buy all top-of-the-range parts, so I will have a brilliant computer by the end of it.

I need every single internal component, so please can you lot list the best ones you know. Money is not an issue at this point.

Can you also tell me of any good UK-based computer parts websites. I have pcnextday.co.uk which looks good, but any others are welcome.

Thanks

Like I said, money is not an issue.

But for sake of argument, lets say... ohhh.... £1500.

oke i can't help you with a website but i can give you some tips about nice hardware.

Oke let's start:
Motherboard (MSI K7N2G-ILSR): I prefer MSI one becose they are cheaper and they have lot's of nice options on it

CPU (Athlon XP 3000+): I would say buy a AMD barthon core 3000+ becose it has more cash 512 in stead of 265 like the thunder,(but if your prefer intel that's good too but is much more expencie than AMD)

VGA (Radeon 9800 Pro): ATI is very good now beter than Geforce. If you have money buy the 9800pro or els take the 9600pro.

memory (1gig): Buy at least 512 and try to get 1gig.

harddrive (DiamondMax Plus 9): 120 gig very nice, to start with you can always get more

cd/dvd (lite-on): i prefer lite-on dvd/cd players burners cheap and good. I would say buy at least cd burner and you could wait with buying a dvd burner but if it fits your wallet then take the dvd burner too.

Screen (liama): I love liama best screans for me. You could take the 19 inch crt. I aint a big fan of plasma screens, they are to expencie i think.

SO this is it if you got any question just ask. I aint saying you have to buy this becose it's the best, but if i could buy a new pc this would be it. So just look what i wrote and ask some more opinions and then decide for your self

Build an AMD64 bit machine with a Soyo Dragon Black Lable board with 1 gig of Kingston memory with two SATA harddrives, ATI 9800 Pro video card, DVD, 52x Burner and loaded with XP Pro! This will be one fast S.O.B. and you will be quite happy with it! For all you AMD "dissers" out there, BITE ME!!! (sorry Diz)I'm not to big on Intel and I HATE MACS!!!! sorry.

Well, I have always thought of getting an AMD (whats a salmmer? )

So:
120gb HD
Radeon 9800pro
AMD 3000+
CD/DVD burner
DVD/CD drive
Mobo (one that takes 8x)
19" monitor
etc etc

That is EXACTLY what I had down on my list to get (just different manufacturers)

Does the make or type of parts REALLY make a difference?

why VGA (Radeon 9800 Pro): ATI is very good now beter than Geforce. If you have money buy the 9800pro or els take the 9600pro.

this kicks the radion 9800 pro's ARSE!! http://www.asus.com/products/vga/v9950u/overview.htm

mwuahaaha - not wanting to start a discussion wich ends with a fight.

for amd: take asus mainboard.

asus are great boards when they work right, they are known to be "buggy" tho and are famous for MANY MANY bios updates. They demand alot of software maintainance (bios updates and newer drivers) so really watch what asus board you buy....do your homework!

hum as i may belive the test's is that the that fx card you showed will not kick ass with 9800pro. but who cares i still choose ati.

And why build 64bits, ther is almost non software that works on that. It's true that you can let it run 32 bits but that meens it's a waste of your money. I meen it's like buying a ferarie and stop it at 50km/h

I meen it's nice you can say yeh i got 64 bit cpu, but for the rest it has nothing for to let you performe more.

the Soyo Dragon series (I think) is the best mobo ever made for the non-server/gamer desktop pc....hands down, no questions!

Right, I have more or less got all my parts. Here is the description for the motherboard I want:

AOpen, ATX, AK79D-400 Max, Skt A, FSB400/DDR400/S-ATA/ATA133, S & LAN, 8xAGP

For the memory it says this:

Memory: 3 Slots for support up to DDR 400/333/266 (PC3200/PC2700/PC2100) (DDR333 recommended)

I have chosen DDR400. Is that wise?
I have chosen 2 sticks of 512mb, but have money for another 512, should I get it, or leave it at 2?

Your too late mate. I already ordered it. I got 2 sticks of 512mb.

Because I saved a little money on that, I was able to up my CPU to the AMD Althon 3000+
And I think I changed something else, but I can't remember what.

seriously, dell.com you can build one yourself but if you've never done it before then dell.com is the way to go. They have a great deal going on right now on the 4600 desktop systems (or is it hte 4600c?) anyways, great system without a monitor for about $725 after taxes and rebates (free shipping). That includes a 2.6GHz P4 w/800MHz FSB, 512MB of DDR RAM @ 400MHz, Sound blaster 5.1 sound card, DVD ROM, CD Burner, 120 gig SATA hard drive, etc etc. All good stuff, and you can upgrade to a 2.GHz (or higher) CPU
