AMD's power is the overclocking. You don't have to buy expensive high number processor like 3800+, because you can overclock the smaller one much higher. I suggest Athlon 64 3700+, with "San Diego" core. It has 1MB cache and great overclocking ability. One mate has overclocked his San Diego to over 3Ghz and it's crushing SuperPi like nothing.

I have the Socket 754 Sempron 64 2500+ on a mild overclock (225 FSB vs stock 200) and could easily go higher if my ram could handle it. With stock cooling I have seen no increase in temps. But on the old Socket A I couldn't get much of an overclock due to heat without buying a much bigger HSF.

I`m running an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.21GHtz with only 512Mb ram. Its about 1 year since i built it but it still runs great. I have a friend who has a new AMD 64 chip and says its great. My parents have a newer computer than mine but its a pentium and has a faster clock speed but still doesnt seem as fast as mine. I constantly go to their house to run anti-spyware programs but it still doesnt seem as good as my comp. The same with my mother-inlaw`s pentium and the pentium at my work, they are newer with faster clock speeds but dont run as good as mine. So i say GO AMD!!!

Use memory divider. Set the frequency of your memories to 166Mhz ~ 333Mhz and then raise the main FSB higher. That causes your processor go much greater FSB than your memories, and the memory ain't a problem anymore.

i'd go intel, i've got a P4 3Ghz and a Sempron 2800, and although i have no problems with either machine, i certainly prefer the P4. The main benefit from the AMD is that it can run somewhere near twice as hot as the Intel which is a bonus when you start overclocking it.

The extra overclock isn't worth it to me to be running the busses out of sync. Plus my current coard is an el cheapo that doesn't go much further anyway.

you a gamer? If so, then the 4800+(AMD) is probably the way to go. Multi tasking has to go with the Dual Core Intels, but they run hot!!

I just installed a server in our NY site with the dual core Intel and I must say it was nice but I was not as impressed as I was with an AMD dual core server I had worked on previously. I know the Intel was running DDR2 as opposed to regular DDR but I think at that small a bus difference (400 DDR vs 533 DDR2) that the memory controller being in the chip on the AMD more than makes up for it. And then the price of the Intel dual core just kills the deal.

amd if u wanna pay less, p4 if u want a more reliable performance, although there isn't a lot to choose between them these days!

CHOOSE AMD, its cheaper then intel and always out performs their chips.

Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 Presler = $1158.00

AMD 4800+ Dual Core = $630.00

Those are the best processors out their for games.

Most of my Intel experience has been with Dell PCs but I can tell you that the one I have on my desktop at work is 3.0 Ghz Intel and the 1.6Ghz Sempron64 in my desktop at home is a lot faster and crashes less. Using AMD means having to research chipsets a lot more to get the stability. I find the SIS chipsets are about the most reliable but they are also the least tunable normally. I ran an old SIS chipset on a socket A Athlon XP for years and only had problems when I screwed up the OS by tweaking too much. The SIS chipset I have now is stable as a rock and my home PC runs 24/7 unless I am out of town for more than a day.

ok guys here is the update, i buld the amd, it was running at 62c., but silly me forgot the thermo past, i whent and got some silver, and now its runing fine at 32c.i over clocked the memory from 166 to 199 and it is still running good at 1.9mhz oc at 55c. anything over that it is unstable. i have 512 of pc333, and a 40 gig hd, and adsl 6.0 this is a sweet setup, and i had both of the chips allready.

I recommend buying Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego core, it has 1MB of L2 cache and very good overclockability. Many people has overclocked it to over 3Ghz and it's faster than a fucking cheetah.

The Sempron may be a new processor in the sense that you just bought it, but it's based on the Athlon XP 2500, which is like three years old. In fact, I'm running one right now. (damn I need to upgrade) The 2500 is just a model number. It has nothing to do with the speed of the processor. The Pentium you have there is about twice as powerful. Not only is the processor speed faster, your FSB is nearly twice what the AMD is, which matters if you want your info to move around quicker. Picture a two lane road filled with cars. Now picture the same amount of cars on a four lane road. They get there faster. Just make sure to build it on a good board. (MSI, Intel, Shuttle) There's a reason why the cheapest board is the cheapest. It sucks. Spend the extra money and put a gig of ram in it and your heart will pitter patter at the performance for at least two years. Assuming, of course, that you don't get it all junked up with spyware. Sorry, the rantings of a computer tech, but there's useful advice in there.

Id agree with this guy

When I built my PC a year and a half ago, I started with a barebones off ebay. What I looked for was the best board I could get, and then the processor it came with. Although initial speed is important, you need to do some research and see what other people have overclocked it too. I ended up with an MSI board and a 2.8 gig intel prescott chip. The Boards got 533 FSB, and I can overclock the chip to 3.5 gig (although i run it @more like 3 gig). Throw in a gig of ram and you got yourself a kickass setup. I'm sure you could get something faster now. Also, make sure you get the most possible expansion slots. You never know what your gonna want to add on in the future.

It depends on country. I saw one German store selling 3700+ San Diego in 210 euros, in Finland you get 3500+ in 230 euros. That's bullshit dammit. I payed my 3000+ 170e and it was cheap at that time.

So, don't waste your money to buy expensive 3800+ and 4000+, buy 3700+ in small money and overclock it to the heaven.
