if you had two cpu, one is a amd sempron 2500 1.75g 333fsb, or a p4 2.4g 533 fsb, which one would you build??? see i have both of these chips, a friend gave me, but i dont know which one to build on? any help, dont the amd 2500 mens it is as fast as p4 2.5g? i have a mainbard for both the amd board will not come on when hooked up, and the intel board gives me 5 beeps a short pause and 5 more beeps and so on, and so on, i have a pc2100 512mb of ddr 266 mhz, i think the intel can use it, but the amd has to have pc2700 at 333 mhz right? and help will be good..

It depends on what you want to do with it. AMD makes kickass CPU's for games. AMD's generally are more efficient than the P4's because of their chip architecture. The Pentiums are inherently limited by their low FSB speed. So if you want a good all around PC than go AMD. The only thing intel has going for its Pentiums at the moment is clock speed, which again is limited by the FSB anyway which makes them inherently slower than the AMD chips.

In short go amd

AMD's Athlon 64 processors are generally thought to be better than the newest P4's. Since you're comparing two older processors, I'll make it easy for you. Build the Pentium. The Sempron may be a new processor in the sense that you just bought it, but it's based on the Athlon XP 2500, which is like three years old. In fact, I'm running one right now. (damn I need to upgrade) The 2500 is just a model number. It has nothing to do with the speed of the processor. The Pentium you have there is about twice as powerful. Not only is the processor speed faster, your FSB is nearly twice what the AMD is, which matters if you want your info to move around quicker. Picture a two lane road filled with cars. Now picture the same amount of cars on a four lane road. They get there faster. Just make sure to build it on a good board. (MSI, Intel, Shuttle) There's a reason why the cheapest board is the cheapest. It sucks. Spend the extra money and put a gig of ram in it and your heart will pitter patter at the performance for at least two years. Assuming, of course, that you don't get it all junked up with spyware. Sorry, the rantings of a computer tech, but there's useful advice in there.

my old computer was AMD and never had any problems with it...this new piece of junk is Intel and pisses me off on a daily bases

I'd go with the intel.

I've read many places that the number on the AMD processor is the equivalent to the Intel processor speed. I.e. a 2500 is the equivalent to a 2.5GHz Intel. I have AMD in all my PCs except my laptop.

It's isn't the EXACT comparison, but it's a fairly good idea of where it stands.

I'd go with the Sempron though. You'd have to figure out what socket it is and then you could start building.

eVGA 256-P2-N517-AX Geforce 7800GT 256MB
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego
Thermaltake Armor VA8000SWA Silver Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case
ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball Blue LED Light Cooling Fan with Heatsink
Sunbeam NUUO SUNNU550-US-BK ATX12V/ EPS12V 550W Power Supply

it's what i just built.

The newer Athlon 64 processors are great. Most have an FSB that is equal to the processor speed. They might not have as high a clock rate at the Intel chips, but they blow them away because of the bus. With these older generation chips like the poster was asking about though, the Intel chips were better. As far as the model numbers with AMD go, a new AMD 64 3800 doesn't run at 3.8 GHz. It runs at 2.4. The Sempron 2500 in question runs at around 1.8. A 1700 runs at like 1.3, so the numbers used to be closer, but as far as I've ever known, it's just a model number.

well the amd 2500 runs at 1.75, and i have both these chips that i post about. the amd is a socket A, and the intel is a socket 478. i allso heard that the 2500 amd runs as fast as a p4 2.5 gig. death123 i love to order all that but i dont have 3g to blow. i like the msi boards i can get a good one for the intel for around 38 bucks, and i have a 512 stick of pc2100 266 to go in it. i know all this is slow to all the new stuff , but it is 10 times faster then the p3 766 and 384 sdram i have now

well, honestly, it can depend on personal preference. I like AMD, mainly because I have duel opterons in my desktop. but, xTHX is right about the processors. good luck with the decision.

With these old processors, just go with whichever one you want. Neither can support PCI-x. The Intel would probably be a little better choice only because of clock speed, but the Sempron is a little better on the heat side if you have a small case to work with. I think performance would be about the same with both.

AMD of course. I have Athlon 64 3000+ 1,8Ghz and it's currently running @ 2,6Ghz. So, AMD offers great price with fantastic overclocking. And I have also Winbond BH-5 memories, so everything is really smooth.

i got a AMD64-fx53, cant compare with a sempron but as spending so much money on a amd was totaly worth it! i would absolutely go amd, but the sempron isnt the best out of the sortiment that amd has, so im quite unsure what to recomend, but im stuck with amd so i can only go with the instincts and say, GO AMD!
