Thats true, I couldn't tell you how many times I started to do one for myself but ended up scrapping them because I didn't like something about the end result

Same here, the key to a good avatar is DEFINITELY starting with a good pic, the rest is relatively simple

That is IMO the most important thing about the process, but it may be different for others
