Proberly a stupid question, but need some advice on this topic
Once again it is time to format the harddrive and re-install windows. Being from the old school I usually use "restart computer in MSDos-mode" and type "format c:". However, I have notice that after this (and re-instalment of Windows) my computer still remembers certains tings - (registrations, settings etc).
Is there a way to completely reset your computer and start again for ground zero. Need advice for both Windows 98 and XP
Erm,its late and my head isn`t clear ,but how a bout making a bootdisk?
hammer and a few swift blows to the square box thingy next to ur screen...give a few to the screen for good measure..it should wipe out most anything
don't use fdisk if your drive is more then 15,7 gb.. my experience is that it can ruin your MBA.. some kind of weird bug. fdisk with 2000 works fine, but the xp and 89 etc. have that bug.
wrsteiner
thx for correcting that
yust smash the hd and buy a new one
Thanks for your advise guys
Was thinking about using Fdisk, because i've heard a lot about it (don't know how it works though) - So thanks for the warning.
Boo - About just using the win98/xp disk and let it format the drive: My win98 is a OEM version, which doesn't work when anything is already installed on the computer - and the win XP disk will format but still give same problem as mentioned below
I used the bootdisk approach to format my HD. However, after reinstalling win98 the computer still remember things - like settings for my graphics card etc. The same thing happens when using the XP disk (experienced this with both my laptop (win98) and desktop(XP)) - is there no way to start all over: reset the computer like in was completely new??
Boot to the CD, and delete the partition that the OS was set up on. Then recreate the partition and format the drive before you install Windows. That will completely erase all data on the dive (well, you'd need a clean room to get any data back after that, provided it wasn't over written in the reinstall).
graphics card settings... there are defaults, so maybe after a full format, clean install, the defaults are exactly like you set them before the format. you sould you do what fiach sais, 'cause nothing will remain, a fresh, brandnew start. and that's what you wanted.
I prefer fdisk that comes with Linux installation CD´s because sometimes Windows Fdisk just doesn´t want to remove all partitions. And Partition Magic is really good and simple if You can get it. I got mine with motherboard.
