I think that's the part that gets missed in a lot of the discussion on both sides of this issue, JakeEman - the "correct education and training."

As a Canadian who grew up and lived in the U.S. for 15 years (Oklahoma, Texas and New York; all in rural areas or smaller cities) I've known many gun owners and used a fair few guns myself over the years. (I do not own any guns; Canada, remember?) Most of the gun owners I've known are conscientious, intelligent, and responsible. I've also known quite a few fools who think that owning a gun (or many guns) somehow makes one: a man; a bigger or better man; more and powerful and important than they really are; or imbued with either some superpowers or super-rights allowing them to do whatever they please to whomever they please.

I'm not opposed to personal ownership of guns, and I'm partial to the arguments presented here about the Framers' intent in the second amendment. However, I - and many people opposed to private gun ownership - are concerned about how those rights are construed by some citizens, e.g. people who own private arsenals of automatic weapons and then say that they're for hunting or the large greymarket for controlled weapons that allows criminals to purchase military firearms that can then be used on unsuspecting civilians. In Canada, a country with very strict gun controls and no consitutionally unassailable right to own a firearm (specifically pistols and automatic weapons; rifles and shotguns are a different story), there are still lots of guns, many brought into the country illegally from the United States and used for criminal purposes.

I think the responsible gun owners of the world need to engage the other side - as many of the commenters here have done - with well reasoned discussions about rights AND responsibilities of gun ownership, about education and training, and about what would be reasonable limits on firearm sales and manufacturing that ensure that everyone's rights are protected - including the right not to be shot by some retard meth head.

Personally, I like the Swiss model: everybody serves in the National Guard from the age of 18, and everybody keeps their rifle in their home.

Thanks for reading!

i would like to own one but i know a lot of ppl that i wouldn't like to see one on, the whole issue i think by the right to bear arms, they are available, and ppl with bad intentions can gain acces to one so much easier, hence the victims

most ppl here in the netherlands have never even seen a gun up close, we just beat, stab, set fire to eachother more :p

as i understand from this dissusion, gun owners are normal intelligent and most of all sane people exercising their right,
how is it done? can i get a gun license and walk into a wall mart, order a desert eagle and some ammo, pay the stuff and walk outside ??

The simple answer is yes you can. But leaving you have to carry it in a secured case, that is for rifles and shotguns. Same goes for pistols as well unless youre like me and youve got a concealed weapons permit, in which case I can stick it in a shoulder holster under my jacket and walk out the door with it, fully loaded, cocked locked and ready to rock!

so thats a special permit you need to have, in order to carry it holstered. so you get such a permit when you need the gun work related?

Harry Truman was a Democrat but no so liberal - at least as "liberal" is used these days (Anti-American Socialist/Progressive, etc.). If you use Truman as your yardstick for liberal then there are few indeed in the current crop of the Democrat party leadership who would qualify as liberal, they have more in common with Hitler/Stalin/Mao/Pol-pot.

Depends on what State you're in. If its work related you're probably automatically granted the permit, like law enforcement agents. I had to register with my county sheriff's department, fill out an application, pay a fee, pass a written test, and have it sent to the State Attorney General's office to have it accepted. Took me about a month and a half to get the CWP. Otherwise, around here you just have to prove that youve been through a hunter's safety course or another similar course and you get a card with a hip# that the state uses to verify your identity in order to purchase firearms.

I have the CWP so I can carry my S&W 44Magnum on me when I travel.

anyone can go buy a gun if they meet the age requirements and pass the f.b.i. check. Thank God it only takes mere minutes for the f.b.i. to check you out instead of a week. Also in some cities/states the concealed carry law is totally different from the next. In some parts of Florida if you own property then you are required to be trained in gun use and must carry that gun with you.

I have 4 pistols 1 shotgun and 5 rifles. I Have a right to protect my family. If I call the police it will take 20-30 minutes for them to get to me. Should I just ask the bad guys to wait until the cops get here? Or should I protect my Family Myself? I did take a firearms training class after I bought my first gun. And I'm very responsible with it. I do have a concealed carry permit and carry when I feel I need to.

not all walmarts are phasing out guns (they don't sell pistols ) . The walmarts where the market is mainly for hunting will continue to carry rifles and shotguns.( my wife works there)

I did up until a month ago. And the news from HQ is that all walmarts are phasing out sales on site. They will offer catalog orders but not on-site sales. I live in Alabama and they've already pulled the guns outta our stores. Who would think they wouldn't sell rifles and shotguns at a walmart in alabama?

Afraid they might be phasing down their stock level in anticipation of a Hilabeast presidency.
