As some of ya around here know i'm attending a major university right now. I'm like 1 1/2-2 years from graduating right now with a degree in Biology with a minor in computer science. Here lately though i've been thinking about going to a culinary school. I've always liked to cook and i'm always experimenting with new recipes (the girls love it). I was just wondering if anyone around here could suggest a school (preferably in the southern United States). Or at least tell me if you think i'm an idiot and should stick with what i'm doing. All feedback will be appreciated.

I think you are an idiot and that you should stick with what you're doing!

No, seriously you should. 1,5 years is not much for getting a good ground in education. Can't you go to culinary school afterwards? I mean, should you find that becoming a cook wasn't as good as you thought you have a degree already that you can fall back on...

Agree with Vesuvius, finish your course 1.5 years isnt very long and then there is nothing to stop you persuing a culinary course after!

Keep your options open!

Stick it out, you'll regret it if you don't. Afterwards I recommend Johnson and Wales, they have a good culinary arts program and there are campuses in Florida, South Carolina, Virginia and North Carolina

Biology - Science - That's where the jobs are, & the money. Finish your courses, get your degree. My 2 cents.

And I agree with Vesusius, Prwil, MeatU2, Crash02 and Bigbadwolf321.

Working as a cook might be fun, but it is really hard work.
And in some cases you think you might have gone to hell.

If you deside to do it later on for fun, go for it, but first make sure you get a proper education and a good job.

id like to agree with everyone else, but from experience i can tell you that its best to go with what your heart desires..
it sounds cliche, but you need to do what you love..i stayed and studied Economics, even though i wanted to do Engineering..
i did economics, no interest in it, did my engineering degree, took twice as long.....i wish i hadnt stayed and done the eco course
id be more advanced in my career and stuff...

its your own choice, were all different that was just MY experience

Even if you can come back you loose alot of the rutine. If you have been studying biology for a year or two and then is gone from it for a year it will be hard to pick up the thread from where you left off. I speak from experience.

(Totally the wrong place for a first post but...)
Think of the possibilities... finish biology, study a culinary course later, and cook with your biology knowledge... there are fairly popular restaurants that have chefs that use science to make really interesting (and tasty) food...

Doing something you love for a profession sure makes life more enjoyable.Maximizing income is a different mindset. You've chosen two very different professions.Want a day job?Obvious answer.Want to work nights and weekends for the rest of your life?Another obvious answer. At least you'll get to sleep later.

Latino and your situation are a little different. Economics and Engineering are both huge fields. Culinary arts is a hard field
to do well in. I worked at a restaurant ( not fast food, actually high class restaurant) chefs there were always talking about
how hard it was to land good chef jobs. Unless you don't mind being head chef at Denny's. Use your bio degree as a good
foundation and work from there.

Off topic: Why aren't you posting pics of hot college girls?

Stick with what you're doing, get the degree THEN go to culinary school. Don't do like me and get far through something and bail on it

i agree with dagnabbit...."why aren't you posting hot college girls?". lol

as for topic, don't listen to a bunch of schmucks on a porn board. follow your heart, man. you have to live with you the rest of your life. you will always have time to second guess yourself, mull over your regrets, but if you are happy when you are doing it..."F" it. there is nothing worse then getting a college degree in a subject that you got "persuaded" to study, instead of one that you really enjoy.(personal experience) and going back again isn't easy no matter what you go back for. you may never make a million $ as a chef, but $ ain't everything, my brother. WE are what it is all about. look around you. PEOPLE are what makes this world go round. the sooner we all accept this and live it, the better place the world would be. $ is good in the right hands, but like any other "dangerous" thing, can be deadly in the wrong set.

i'll shut up now.

I'm at a major university as well. My major is genetics, which means 5 chemistries, 2 physics, and 2 Calculus courses MINIMUM. I also want to re-enlist in the Marine Corps right now, but I know the consequences, if a military career doesn't work out for me. Like you, I'm thinking about pursuing my interests, but I know it doesn't pay too well. Unlike you, I have 2 years to go. I'm toughing it out. And should you.

What would you rather say when, at the age of 85, you look abck on your life?

"Damn, I wish I'd made more money!"

or

"Damn, I wish I'd have been happier!"

Take your answer and apply accordingly.

I don't feel like giving advise for such a decision from remote. At least not as long as I didn't taste what you are cooking. Maybe you should read the book "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" by Anthony Bourdain. Besides beeing fun to read it tells what it really means to be kitchen chef.
