The two most dangerous things the Marine Corps has are a Lt. with a compass and a PFC with a badge.

If you want marketable skills that lead to a civilian career when you're done, go into the Navy or the Air Force.

Also, make sure you get a contract for a career before agreeing to enlist. Don't buy any of that "but we don't do contracts" bullshit either. They do contracts. They just don't like to do contracts.

For what your wanting to do, I'd go Navy. Their is our VBSS (we board boats and search for narcotics basically...similar to Coasties), it's a blast acting like a SWAT team on a boat. Divers, SWCC, SAR are some pretty intensive swimming jobs to be in in the Navy. The Puddle Pirates (I'm Navy, I'm allowed to say that, unlike some of you who aren't or have never been military) and Navy work together on a lot of things, but Coasties go out to sea A LOT more but don't go anywhere special. It's all up to you, there's a downside in every branch. I was wanting to be an Air Head, but I didn't want a slack job...even though the chicks are freakin' hot (PS, Navy chicks are whores 85% of the time...especially on big ships).

My advice? Don't listen to civilians (especially on a board like this), talk to people that have been in, or are in the military. A lot of false information is thrown around and usually the person has no idea what the hell they are talking about. I would also go to some military discussion boards, there are specific websites that will help you choose...and they don't have a quota to meet like your recruiter.

The Navy's primary mission? To protect the Marine life
ARMY= Aren't Really Marines Yet
Air Force: AF pilot birth control? Their personality
Coasty: Remember, if you can't swim...just stand up and get back on the boat!

In all honesty though, im running the risk of being homeless pretty soon and if I hit that point, its going to be whoever will take me. In your situation it definatly sounds like your leaning towards the Navy, tech and resume wise. If you want more of the satisfaction of helping people (ie rescues)I would lean towards coast guard.

Sorry for thread jacking, just felt I had to breifly express my similar situation aswell.

It might have to be the leather neck for you. I was in the Air Force and if you have any kind of money problems it could hurt you getting your security clearance. Without a security clearance in the Air Force can you say "how would you like your omlete, Sir" or "would you like to check out a basketball today, Sir".

Have you considered nursing? My buddy was an EMT and he's graduating nursing this fall. He's headed for flight nurse, which is pretty much the top spot in ER nursing. I bet they make about 80k/yr or so. Nursing is in such demand right now that you'll get an ER job right out of school no problem.

I support our troops but I hate what our military is being used for. We are no longer a country that preserves peace... we're a country that polices our economical interests... so hopefully you consider that before you sign any papers :/

As far as keeping in line with the Marine Biology/Ecology career goals and the military I think the obvious (IMHO) is the Navy then the Coast Guard. Yes, I am somewhat biased as I did seven years in the USN (82 -89). IF you are looking at marine biology see answer above, high tech (electronics, research, etc) think USN and USAF. If you are thinking medical I would look at the Army.

With a degree you can fast-track to a commission in the Army, either through OCS or ROTC. You can do ROTC while you finish grad school and be commissioned in 2 years or less.

The Army and Marinies are getting bigger = more opportunities. The AF and Navy are shrinking.

My brother's in the Army, two tours in the sandbox...says the same damned thing about the recruiters. Only has a few more months left until his five years are up in Ft. Campbell, KY, thank God.

His other saying on the Army is, "Typical government operation; fuck up and move up".

Hopefully he makes it out. I know too many guys who've had their contracts "extended" involuntarily...

i have a buddy who's in the US navy working on a sub. he suprised us all, one day, a few yrs ago by saying, out of the blue, that he was joining. one of the reasons he joined was to pay of the huge debt from uni. got a recent email from him and it sounds he's itching to get out- 2011.

my ex girls brother use to be in the US coast guard. from alameda to coos bay to NY. after serving for several yrs he got out a cple yrs ago.

my ex girls half sisters son is a marine...well, actually a cook. his base was attacked. when i met him he was on leave. cple wks later he was back in iraq.

i don't agree with some of the policy but if you feel pursuing a career in the military is worthwhile, by all means join: in life, have no regrets.
