Thanks SP!

Ok ok, I didn't realize the way an ex hd worked, that there's an actual hard drive in this "box" so i riped the whole thing apart (carefully) took it to staples, and the tech guy showed me this 'actively cooled hard drive enclosure'. basically plug any HD into it, so i bought that, and im pretty sure im back in business...

Get rid of winrar and use 7-Zip, I've never had a problem with it. http://www.7-zip.org/

I don't know why you put .lnk behind it? All you have to do is go to Default Programs in the start menu and set the file types you want it to play, mine has all it's defaults set 100/100 with no problems but I'm on Windows 7. Maybe that's the problem, you both still using an ancient OS.

To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Note: With some computers, if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Trouble Getting into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe mode - If after several attempts you are unable to get into Windows 2000 or Windows XP Safe Mode as the computer is booting into Windows, turn off your computer. When the computer is turned on the next time Windows should notice that the computer did not successfully boot and give you the Safe Mode screen.

Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Once you're done in Safe mode if you want to get back into Normal Windows restart the computer like you normally would and let it boot normally.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. I'm assuming you meant you downloaded and installed VLC and the shortuct isn't working, or everything is opening with VLC. .ink in the extension for a windows shortcut. If you can't get it to uninstall, you can manually delete it.

I will forwarn you that this might work, but just shove the problem further up your ass. Depends on whats going on.

Open program files and ONLY DELETE THE VLC FOLDER. The open app data(open run from the start menu and type %appdata%) and find the VLC folder and delete that. Restart the computer to make sure nothing is still trying to access the process, and see if that works.

Other than that, I have had to use the fix which was posted a few posts ago. Very similar problem to, I believe.

Post back and let us know if this helps.

I deleted your attachment. It's not a good idea to post files in the public forums that make irreversible changes to the Windows registry, particularly when no description is given about what the file does.

after i uploaded the VLC software every file in windows xp had gotten ".LNK" added to the back end of it. i mean EVERY file, every document, every program. i wasn't allowed to download ANYTHING off the internet nor was i able to spin up any repair cd's in the machine. nothing worked, everything was blocked. even in safe mode everything still had ".LNK" behind it. whatever i clicked on, a notice popped up that it seemed i didn't have the program to open the file. what hit my computer has a name, something "protect2009", if you want to find out about it.

i finally got rid of it by going into safe mode. there, protect2009 allowed me to rename "systemrestore.LNK" back to just systemrestore for a few seconds, i clicked on it, system restore opened up, i jumped on the first date i saw, and after waiting 7-8 agonizing minutes for the restore bar to slowly creep cross the screen, it kicked me out of safe mode back to my opening screen and all the ugly security icons started disappearing with my regular icons showing back up from behind them. i was one fucking happy camper!!!!
