Australian Flag called a gang flag by some?

Just recently in the news over here the Australian flag

show here:


was originally banned but due to public outcry has been downgraded to "unreccommended to bring and no big flags" at one of the biggest rock festivals we have (the big day out) due to the fact that the concert organinisers call it a gang flag and would cause to many tensions between the muticutural societies

there are 2 or more side that i see the the arguement

1. there are alot of bogans who are just beaming with patrotism and unfortunatly underlying racism who wear the flag and call themselves australian just so they can get away with it (however sometimes there is more to the situation than meets the eye)

on the other hand

2. there are usual layed back aussies who enjoy wearing the flag as a sign of unity patrotism and national pride of all the people who are united beneath it and just want to celebrate being australian

so here's the question i pose to WBW and anyone who can be bother,

1. do you think its wrong to punish the majority of aussie because a minute minority use the flag to cover racism
2. do you think the aussie flag is a gang flag (come on it looks so innocent)
3. in your national country of origin if this happened do you think there would be national outrage

just testing the water to see everyones oppionons to be honest alot of people here are sitting on the fence and see both sides of the arguement

I personally think its crap that they are banning a NATIONS flag becuase some idiots thought it would be nice to disgrace a national symbol. but than again it just shows u how a small thing can ruin it for alot of other people. wear ur colors poudly and dont let that bunch of shit ruin it

Take back your flag! Simple as that! Don't allow some fucked-up group of anti-social misanthropes ruin it for the rest of you. It stands for something that is connected to your national soul and national persona - keep it, strengthen it and wear it proudly! I'd look with great suspicion at those who want it banned: I wouldn't be surprised if those pulling the strings had a far more sinister purpose in mind. If real aussies are told often enough that their flag/emblem/symbol is a hateful thing, they will believe it, and at that point, what had been a great commonwealth ends. And isn't that on the agenda of at least one group (which will remain unnamed because of certain WBW moderators and their political tilting) - said group holding substantial sway over significant real estate in the southwestern pacific?

The whole backstory to the fact they wanted it banned was the conulla riots (mind you it was not as bad as some other riots *violence wise* but it was still pretty bad and something the majority of australians were against it was just an ugly day for all)

(on a side note i am in favor of wearing the flag reguardless of rules or regualtion its one of our highest national symbols

at last years BDA concert, bogans went around to non-white australians and told them to swear allegiance to a flag they were carrying, and if they didnt...theyd be beaten for been un-australian etc..

i think its a bloody disgrace that this nations symbol of unity is treated to such words and actions. This flag represents ALL australians, it unites a nation of people from all backgrounds... its the one thing all of us here have in common, whether were white, black, brown or whatever...we go overseas, and our passport shows our flag. Meaning no matter what we look like, having this flag there means we are australian.

New laws should be made so that NO ORGANISATION/PERSON/EVENT/ENTITY can ban the australian flag from the public.

I think it's complete bs and people should wake the fuck up and face some real problems instead of nitpicking on a flag cos some morons decided to use it. You can't ban a fucking flag, it's ridiculous. But no it doesn't seem all that innocent, the upper left part of the flag is indeed very resemblant to the south states flag, which has been involved in much hatred, racial hatred at that part.

I think it's absolute crap, and another one of the press's "Oh we are bored, let's go stir shit up, how about putting a stick through that hornets nest?". As twwain said it's you nations flag ffs and should be treated as such.

Flags are a symbol of pride an nationality, crapping on that is crapping on a whole nation. I remember a year or so ago, when our flag was burned, because of a fucking cartoon. It's not okay, and it inspires the hatred of a whole nation to do stuff like that.

I think it should be stopped before it runs out of hand, it's not the flag they are pissing on, but principle and a symbol of pride for an entire nation. Very stupid move to ban a flag, not only will there be an outrage, but it might also end out more severe, what it ended out with in my country was a sepperation of the country, a big boost to racism and 6mths of enlarged hate for an ethnical minority, so is it really worth it? Some people just don't think before they act, the concert holders could be facing alot of trouble regarding this.

Ofcourse it's not, it was the flag of the southern states, but it is often remembered and used in the coherison, it was a symbol of seggregation and sepetation of the southern states, but they were active slave dealers and treated foreigners as labour animals.
