Well...he made it through ok. Got hit twice but neither time was too bad, shrapnel in his hands and arm. Never had to leave his unit though. Anyways, you had expressed an interst so I thought i'd just update.

Yeah, tried to IM you pecker head! Glad he made it out ok. Living life once you get back is pretty rough though. But glad he's ok. I'll be making many stops to the worst parts of Iraq. Gee, I can't wait.

Here's the back story. Mike's platoon was the one trapped on the rooftop. He made it through the doorway, LT Malcolm didn't. He was KIA.

Here's a video during the event, at about the 5 or 6 minute mark i believe. My kid is a 0351, after the LT went down, he took out the Minaret(sp) with a rocket.

my best friend has jus left to go in the turkish army yesterday but he only has to do 1 months service as he paid a few grand to get out of doing a years service, i think it is unfair that people get forced to go in the army i know he has been forced, and if i remember rightly so has wit_ & Ascaris!

Well, to be exact, everyone here don't get forced to go to army as in military service.
You can choose to do the normal armed service, or un-armed service in a base. Or if you think that being in the army is un-ethical or something, you can do the civilian service, which is doing things like taking care of old people and such for 13 months. the lenght of normal armed service is 6, 9, or 12 months depending on what you are trained to do.

But the bottom line is that in Finland, everyone is expected to do something for their country, either armed or civilian service. And in my opinion this is the right way. When we have only 5 million people and a country bigger than the Whole United Kingdom, it's the only way we can afford to keep up a defence force that can be taken seriously.

But sadly still around 70 people every year decide not to do anything for the country that has given them everything in life and choose to go to prison for 197 days for it.

I personally haven't enjoyed my service (which by the way ends in 7 days ) that much mainly because of some personal things, but it just is a thing that I need to do like every man in this country. And so I did it.

it does make sense, but i a way i do something for my country i pay tax which if i had a choice i would not but the tax i pay goes towards new hospitals, schools and roads etc..., but i meant that you hav a choice of doing it or go to prison which i dont find fair as in my friends case he lives in the uk and has done all his life now he has gone to Turkey to be in the army for a country that he has visited for a few months in his life, in your case it is understandable and i respect u for doing it, it sounds like you like living in your country and feel strongly about it and you want to give something back to it but would you have chosen a differnt way to give something back to your country if there was a differnt choice available like teaching or something, i think that perhapse instead of countries forcing ppl to serve in forces they could offer the choice of going to a country like affrica and helping them get out of poverty!
