For those of you who have no idea what I'm going on about, this is a series of books originally Twilight fan fiction, to which the author changed the names and title after getting a publishing deal. It contains a fair bit of BDSM, which is why it's been described as 'mommy porn', as the majority of readers are mothers of a certain age.

More info.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifty_Shades_of_Grey

Anyway, it seems nearly every female I know has read it, or is in the process. Already the series of books has sold around ten million copies worldwide, with book rights having been sold in 37 countries, and set the record in the U.K. as the fastest-selling paperback of all time surpassing the Harry Potter series. Around by me, they've outsold everywhere, my local ASDA had 3000 in on Monday, they were sold out by Monday afternoon.....

Now for this to outsell Harry fecking Potter is amazing. I'm not big into reading, but my mrs is, and she has read excerpts, and has said the quality of writing is terrible, the author is just a normal person, however it seems to be titillating some people.

So, anyone read it or know of anyone?

So have you read it then? Is it as shit as people are saying, or is it worth reading?

It is sort of like bad cake... you can try and convince yourself that it isn't that bad going down but it definietly has almost zero long term value outside of being able to scare the shit out of impress some milfs with an occasional apropos reference to Christian Grey in conversation.

Love the analogy!

Just to see if anyone else has read it.

Nowadays all that matters is that the stuff caters to the target audience tastes. Plot, character, character growth, conflict, depth, and style are irrelevant as long as the schlock sells. All those "readers" want is something they are comfortable with and know they will like to begin with. Novels are devolving just like TV, movies, and video games are all for the lowest common denominator. I find the whole thing horrifying.

Most of my female friends have read it now and during some of their discussions they have really come out of their shells. They tried to embarrass me with some of the stuff they found in it but it seems very tame compared to some of the stuff I've got up to and seen.
They did have to look up what a butt plug was??? Then they wondered why someone would use one???
I couldn't believe just how in experienced they are (I believe the term from the book is "vanilla".) and they are all married.

They did comment that it wasn't very well written.

have read portions of it... it's really really awful writing. You can get better sex stories from Penthouse Letters. It plays right into the teenage minds of bored lonely housewives.

I know!

Although the wife's never used one, she'd know what one was....

Btw, ive seen the book is only £3 on iBooks, so I'm gonna buy it, just so I can say how shite it is

Heaven help us if they make a TV series from it a la Sex in the City.

I was thinking the same thing. The Missus has a thing for Nora Roberts novels while I'm sitting next to her reading a first edition Percival Lowell "Mars". But then I spent time on WBW...

These books are a tragedy in literary history.

I may just have to read the first book for myself to see what all the hoopla is about.

By the way, Universal acquired the rights for the film in March.

I just wonder how much they'll have to sanitize it for the big screen.
