Possible Transmission Problem

I doubt there is any way to get help with this problem because it involves a strange noise, but anything is worth a shot, right?

Anyway, heres the problem - I have a 98 Lumina with low miles (42,000), and out of the blue a strange noise started coming from the motor. For lack of a better description I'll call it a whining type of noise. The noise is louder at lower speeds, but still there a higher speeds. When ever the automatic transmission shifts the noise shifts with it.

I had my mechanic check it out, and his opinion was there was only two things that made that particular type of noise. One was the power steering pump, and the other was the transmission pump. After checking all the involved fluids, and doing a test drive he said in his opinion it was in fact the transmission pump. He advised me to get the fluid and filter changed, and put a bottle of Lucas transmission treatment in it. As a transmission fluid and filter change is not a finical option for me right now, he advised at the very least to drain some fluid out, and top it back off with the Lucas which is what I did.

After three days of driving the noise may have abated somewhat at highway speed, but it's still there.

Anyone have a similar experience with a Lumina (or any other type of car for that matter), or any mechanics or anyone with mechanical knowledge think I'm on the right track? Any advice is of course appreciated.

sounds like u're mechanic's on the right track.just remember to have them flush your transmission cooling system too.friction plate particles are probably clogging the filter and lines, thats where the whining comes in at the shift(its starveing for tranny fluid).good luck to u.
