oil smells like gas

I just bought a new car. Well, a used one, but new to me. One of the cars I test drove had something I've never seen before. After I drove it for a while, I took the oil dipstick out, and the oil smelled very strongly like gas. I didn't buy that one. But my question is, what would cause that, and is it real bad?

more than likely the piston rings were shot and allowing gas to flow past the piston and into the crankcase. this is very very very bad cause oil to lose viscosity which can lead to crank bearings going bad. can also cause crankcase to explode

usualy the oil will just thin out real bad and you can seize the engine up worst case scenario is the explosion! good thing you didnt buy it right?

indeed
i can imagine also no other reason,
why gas could be in the oil,
except some dumbass had poured gas into the oil

true
there is the very remote possiblity that and I do mean very remote only heard of it happening on a single four stroke dirtbike once where the gas was forced backwards through the intakevalve seat and into the oil

I'd have to agree with Goat. People get the term "my engine blew up" confused with engine seizures, or throwing a rod. I'm sorry to break it to you, but closest thing to an engine blowing up would be if the head blew, in which case the top end of the block would simply separate from the lower releasing a shit load of pressure.

Agreed...I think your right about the casue, but I've been working on cars as a hobby for years and never once even heard of that kind of thing.

i agree that, the crankcase wouldn't explode
comes rather to the wear of the crankshaft bearings or
the worst case could be the damage of the pistons
in german it's called Kolbenfresser,
i don't know the english word for that
that means the piston seizes in the cylinderwall
