Sorry if this belongs in the car forum, I'd understand if it got moved, but I put it here since it's something that effects just about all of us and has nothing to do with whether you're a car freak or not. If you can pump gas, you can enact this advice.
I have a 6 cylinder 2.8L 1992 Chevy S-10 truck whose engine is still in great shape....recently replaced plugs, distributor cap, etc. Doesn't smoke, still has plenty of pickup. I used to just put a mere 5 gallons in it at a time and could go 100 miles on that, making for a 20 mpg average. Last week, for the first time in a long time, I put 10 gallons in it. I was able to drive 260 miles on that, making my MPG a much improved 26. Talk about a difference! I'd heard that your car runs more efficiently when the tank is full but I had no idea just how much more efficiently. I'll skip the technical details as I had them explained to me, but basically you're losing less gas to evaporation the less air you have in the tank. I've put 15 gallons in today and expect even better mileage as I go through that.
Next week I'm going to fill the tank up, then stop and re-fill it every 150 miles, keeping it as full, and efficient as I can. Of course if Detroit auto manufacturers ever grew a brain and stopped doing everything by fucking comittee, they'd put a simple, inexpensive plastic surface float in the gas tanks to thwart this phenomenon and make the cars equally efficient whether they had 1/2 gallon or 50 gallons in them. Just be sure to will me your posessions before you hold your breath waiting for that to happen.
One other thing you can do is NOT be a pussy and turn off your fucking air conditioning. I live in Texas where the heat index was 102 today, and do not ever run mine because it EATS gas, and I'm still standing. People run it way too often. I can't tell you how bad I want to smack people
driving around with their windows up (i.e. with the AC on) at night when it's a balmy 78 F degrees just because they don't want to mess up their fucking hair. Quit being such a bunch of goddamned metrosexualized wanker pussies already. Cars have their fuel efficiency tested and rated while bieng driven with the direction of the wind, no AC on, and probably going downhil as well. Even then the sticker mileage is a fucking lie anyhow that no car of that model year could possibly live up to on a good day. If you wanna see somehing closer to that inflated fantasy-land sticker mileage, you can turn off the AC and get at least 20% greater efficiency.
