I'm 47 and just bought my fifth car... They average 175K over seven years before I toss 'em. Of course, by the fifth yr., each begins to look like 8 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag. But I remain proud of getting my $$ worth. Not one relationship has lasted as long..
How many miles/km does your car get before junking it?

My POS '90 Dodge Grand Carvan is showing 230K miles and going strong. My other POS Chrysler product, '96 Dodge Intrepid, is showing 206K miles and just went in for new front struts. Both engines are running strong and using very little(leakage,no burning) oil.
1999 Acura TL just turned 141K miles and will likely last 300K before I have the valves done.

Serious answer this time:
It depends.
My Wrangler had about 175,000 mi. on it when it died. And by died, I mean "hit a telephone pole".
My first Grand Cherokee had about 21,000 mi. on it when it died. And by died, I mean "rolled over".
My second Grand Cherokee had about 80,000 mi. on it when it died. And by died, I mean "hit by a box truck".
My current car is at about 120,000, which is more than ideal, but it's still in pretty good shape.

I loved Audi...I mean, I would have full on made love to the R8, but the guys at the Audi dealership were total prudes. Anyway, my sisters 3.2L went at 89,000km KM...the fucking engine blew at 89,000km..
I don't think I had ever been so fucking pissed off before in my entire life. We took it to a Volkswagen dealership when it started acting up, because it was closer than the Audi, and when we were pulling in the parking lot, it quit, and pissed oil all over the parking lot. THEY TRIED TO JUST ADD OIL.
Luckily she bought it from Audi, and it had a full warranty, so the engine was rebuilt for free...but I had never lost so much faith in a company so fast. She has the tiptronic shifter in her car, so there is no way she was just overrevving he balls off it either.
Audi was cool about the rebuild, but it took a few weeks..and they made her pay for a rental car, so watch that shit EL-dawg...I was fucking stunned.

Hrm. That shit sucks. And is a little concerning, since, you know, since that's like WAY too early for that shit to happen. 55,000 miles? Shit, maybe you replace like, the tires or something in that time, but the fucking engine?

I do less than 8,000 per year and as i said before i change my car every 2 years for new, i average 60 miles to the gallon (UK Measure) and pay about £5.50 (About $7.50) for Diesel.

As a Automotive Engineering student I had to do lots of calculations of vehicles so far. Average lifespan expected is 300.000km maximum. Usually 200.000km economically. Offcourse some last longer, some last shorter. It's never to predict 100% secure.

And I had three rides so far, with about 200.000km a year I stick around 100.000km with them and sell them again.

My last car a Plymouth Sundance lasted 14 years and 230,000 km. Engine was sound but bodywork was starting to go. That little POS went halfway across Canada twice and survived a couple of hit and runs...donated it to the Kidney Foundation and got the tax receipt for it at the end....

i've never bought a new car so i always added some miles to what was allready on the car...
the first one(Renault 9) i bought at about 116 000km and eight months and 40 000km later it was crumbled in a head on collision
the second car(opel kadett e) i had for about 18months, bought it at 70 000km and sold it at about 150 000km
the third car(opel kadett e) i had for only three months and that went from 95 000 to only 98 000km, then a nissan patrol slammed into the side and i got the chance at buying my current ride.
the citroën xm had about 166 000km on it and it still rolls at 293 000. i'm not thinking of getting rid of it because it's just too good! it still starts, it still drives great and still no rust whatsoever!

Nice timing on this thread. I'm shopping for a reliable used car (budget of $6500) and frankly can't decide which way to go. I need something that won't break down, will be confortable and fun to drive (I drive a lot for work), and gives a professional image. One day I think that it makes sense to buy a non turbo Volvo or BMW, but the next I think just go with a good old Mercury Grand Marquis or Lincoln. Anyone have any thoughts?
Is the Northstar engine really as bad as people say?

???? WTF I have a 1995 Toyota Camry (Lexus type), 228,000 km....runs fabulous, no rust, looks great and sporty, great mileage on 4 cylinders.
You may laugh bit at that, but instead I put my money into 3 homes (paid for) I own, not cars to throw away.............
