son-in-law had the same problem with his ford ranger.he bought a cheap neon and left the ranger sit for over a year.his uncle got it off him and changed the fluid and filter and it runs smooth now.my assumtion was that the fillings settled over time and after the flush and filter change it allowed the valveing to open properly.please keep us updated with what happens cause i for one know tranys can be the most expensive of fixes on a vehicle.

Sounds a little expensive to me. I think Watty is right about the tiptronic. I can't really say because we have already established that you guys "over there" get royally screwed when it comes to cars.

In the US even if you bought it privately, you might still have recourse against the seller depending on how much you paid for it.

As an aside, I cant believe that there is a whole website dedicated to finding a gearbox. Next thing you know we will have phones without wires, pre-packaged meals, scary.

3 large sounds right for a tranny job on a BMW.. usually thats the price for FWD.

you can check http://www.craigslist.org/ to buy one privately and have it installed ny a tranny tech.

Whatever the cost, I would still personally "visit" the guy who sold it to you and ask him to contribute towards the cost

The guy died, i bought it off his wife. I paid £5k for it she was asking £6k so i guess what i thought was a good deal initially has now turned out to be an average buy to say the least.

Has anyone ever noticed that the native speakers around here have the worst spelling abilities?
Or do I need to re-tune my parser?

Yep, he took the engine apart piece by piece and checked to see if it was going to go wrong in 3 months time. In fact, he took the car the Germany to the BMW factory and got them to dismantle the gearbox first.

If it's so stupid, how could you tell if this gearbox was planning to pack up?

typical, the guy died just to avoid fixing a gearbox. You can't trust anyone these days

Other than the gearbox the car's in mint condition, the transmission specialist says it's rare for BMW gearboxes to go even after 100,000 miles, but it can happen.
