HELP! Need urgent car advice!

Just had awful news from BMW. My car needs a new gearbox and it's going to cost over 3 grand to fit a new one. I've only had it a couple of months and it cost 5 grand! Is it possible to buy a refurbished gearbox for a lot cheaper? The model is 2000 X 520 SEi 2.2L V6 Auto.

You've only had the car a couple of months, if you bought it from a dealer, it should be covered under a years warranty.

Speak to your local mechanic, ask his advice

first off what is it able to do and what isn't it doing?

no first off go and beat the shit outta the bloke ya bought it from.

then take it for a second opinion... 3 grand for a new gearbox? doesnt sound right to me.

it has a fault indication on the dash which if you look in the manual, indicates that there is afault with the automatic transmision and not all of the gears are being selected. BMW say that the gearbox is knackered and needs replaced. When i drive it it stays in a really low gear and you need to rev it a lot to get the car to move!

i cant help you with transmission mate... and i doubt unless ya a bmw specialist anyone will.

try taking it to a bmw dealer and see what they say

I have bmw too, 3series and manual but from your information i understood this: u got quite new car, e39 which has been built from 1996 to 2004. BMW's own servicegarages are always fucking expensive, i've learned that too, but i guess that's a job whoever greasemonkey can't do, but get in touch with your local bmwclub if they know any contacts besides bmw's official garage. Don't know your laws but in Finland u should be able to sue the carseller in case that you got premiumcar built 2000 which is totally rare to be time enough to get automatic transmission fucked which leads to some more than unusual driving by previous owner. bad english i dont bother to watch my text now sry

Go to BMW specialist not a dealer to start with they don't have to send money back to Fritz to buy sausage and then try these people.

yep... i thought 3 grand was expensive... but if im not wrong the 520 SEi has a triptronic gearbox? So that will add a few hundred to the price... But i would think youd be talking around 1.5 - 2 grand.

do you know what the changingjob costs in local official bmw dealer? the rest 2300€ with little sarcasm

3000 grand is too much hell go to the scrap yard and get a decent one from a car that was in an accident for say 500 quid

look at my last post, 200 pounds, and every cheap backyard mechanic can put it in...

UPDATE: getting a reconditioned one for £740 from a car that did 14,000 miles a mechanic is gonna charge £200 to replace it.

Check you transmission fluid & pipe etc. Also take a look at the clutch. Good luck

i agree,but if u just try a simple flush and filter replacement u might be lucky and get a gang of miles out of it.worn clutch packs would clog your valveing and cause it not to shift to the next gear.
