aight ppls, i'm being serious here. i have a stock 1997 saturn SL2 (love my car) and i'm going to be doing some serious audio work on it within the next couple of months. i need some ideas on building my own speaker box for 4 12' subwoofers, 1 1200w amp, and 1 200w amp. i was thinking of using a bunch of dynamat, diamond plate angle iron, plexiglass, and lots of clear caulking to make kind of a big U shape going into the trunk.

one of my major concerns with this whole project is that i work construction, so there's always tools in my trunk

4 12's are gonna be sick!! If you are concerned about trunk space why not just use 2 12" speakers. plenty of bass!! BTW what kind of deck are you using? and what about the speaker set up inside the vehicle?

too much bass and you'll rattle the polymer right off!!! :P

thnx bach, i was thinking about possibly adding in two small one way air pipes for port holes in the truck, give it kind've that exhaust look. haven't gotten a deck yet, but i have the amp and speakers for it. i have $250 to spend on the deck, so any good ideas, preferably a red one (red car). oh, and i hate sony decks, so don't bother with those.

and as for the speaker setup in the car, i'm going have an extra battery, and a 1.4fW capacitor for the subs, powered by the 1200W amp, and two 100W 6x9's in the back window being ran by the 200W amp. there's also a 130W 4" in each door. i was thinking about putting two 2" dome tweeters on the front dash

sounds pretty sweet! $250 can get you a pretty good deck! I happen to like blaupunkt. I went to www.crutchfield.com they have good prices and give you the installation kits for free. as far as your speakerbox goes, I wouldn't port it. unless you only listen to hip hop, I suggest leaving the box sealed. (great for rock) if you can get 6" componet speakers in the fronts you'd really be rockin' you will need a crossover if you decide to add tweeters to the 4" speakers.

Not sure if you considered it but if you don't mind losing the spare tire you could use that space for a custom fiberglass flush fitting box.

If you haven't worked with fiberglass before check this out for some info:

And although this isn't your model car here's two ideas of what you could do. These are single sub set ups but you could probably imagine something else.

And here's an article on how to build a spare tire sub box, you could probably get creative with this;

(smacks his forehead) doh! shit, i didn't even think about using fiberglass. that's a pretty good idea actually. i have a buddy who has a shop i could use. i could prolly do it all in one day if i do it right. it'll cost a little more though.....what can i say, i'm a cheap-ass

I'm more of an american car guy. Not a fan of Hondas at all. Can't really say anything bad about them though.

the new Acura TL is the closest thing to the honda I like

I have intrest in many cars... one of my dream cars is a 67 mustang - california coupe - deep cherry red w/a hard black vinyl top and black interior... I dont knock anyones intrest in cars... I love them all... well except yugos...

But for now I take pride in my Honda, I know its not the fastest thing on the road and its not the best lookin car around but I love it...

Haha. I can be a bit of a help sometimes. lol. And Bach, the new TL is sweet! Especially with the optional lip and sides kit. It's just too pimp for a sedan!

Dub, I dig that year mustang too! Clean and classic. I always wanted to grab one and just work on it as a project, like my first restoration project or something. Your honda has potential, only thing that matters is how you like it and what you want to do with it.

The only problem i've seen with people doing their own boxes is that they don't take into account for air space. Speakers need exact box sie/air space etc to work at an optimum level.
Secondly, is the amp a mono amp or not. Subs need a mono amp(class D) to support the power they suck.
I have 3 12's in my trunk with a 1500 watt amp. I decided to go with the 1500 cuz it isnt a mono amp.
Lastly are they bridged? Cuz with it, any one of the subs could get all power at once and blow. Thats another usual problem. Many people get too much power going to only one sub.
One more thing, whats the max power to RMS power of the subs? With 3 different subs taking power from a 1200 watt amp, without a bridge, (now, there is a formula for this) but at my guesstimation, each will only get an average of 300 watts RMS. But thats more than enuff for any sub unless its a JLW7 or sumthin.
Good Luck

cuhriscuhn brings up good points. The speakers won't sound the best they can if those points aren't addressed.

One thing you could do is to check to see how much cu.ft. is required for the subs. If you're going with the traditional box side make sure your volume equals the needed cu.ft space. If you're going fiberglass then a good idea is to fill it with rocks (or something else to measure volume) then take the "filler" and place it in a regular box where you could measure it volume through standard means to see if you have the appropriate space for the subs in the fiberglass enclosure. (Sorry if the explanation doesn't make sense, check the link below if it's confusing.)

rocks? nah, i'll stick with foam filler instead

He is using rocks to measure volume. not to have them in your speaker box.
