Car stereo speaker size change from the factory installed size?

I drive a '92 Chevy S-10 extended cab. The AC Delco factory casette player stereo in this thing, which has served me well for the last several years, now has a rear speaker (mouted in the door pillar) going bad. I'll spare you the story about why I know that, but trust me, it is. I am wanting to replace it with only something that was about as good as what was in there to begin with. I do not want to add an amp, get a zillion-watt new speaker system or anything that would cost that much. If I had $500 to dump into this I would not be here asking this. Speaker space in a truck cab, as far as I can tell, is rather limited to what they gave you at the factory since there is no rear deck and I do not have kick-panel mounted speakers.

Trouble is, the size of that speaker and it's attendant cutout is an increasingly rare 4 X 10. They are still made in that size alright, and by good manufacturers like Sony, Pioneer, etc. Every last one of them in this size sells for $100. But I have also noted that there are speakers with more surface area selling for much less than $100, and by the same manufacturers. Is there some way I can easily adapt a new speaker size to fit in this same space? What would one usually do in my position? Do they make adapters for this?

Sorry if this does not belong here but sicne it has more to do with the stereo then the truck it's in, I figure it may be safe tio put here.

get some Infinity's, or get some ten inch speakers and throw them behind the seat, that way you can increase your speaker size

I myself am working on an all alpine system . . . They have pretty good quality stuff for a decent price. I was at a car show last Aug and bought a headunit that was normally $279.00 and got it for $175.00. . . . .

Just where behind the seat can I put them? That si the seating area for the passengers who may have to sit in the jump seats. As for the other systems ther where mentioned, that still doesn't address my size problem.

i must've skipped over about the part where you said you had an extended cab. hook them up back there anyway and screw passengers

Install some door speakers. A `92 Chevy should already have the holes for door speakers. If not, get a left and right hand tin snips and make them.

Get yourself a Crutchfield catalog.

If you're in a hurry, you might be able to find one in a bookstore.

If you are happy with the sound and don't want to invest a lot of time or money, I would recommend looking in three different places for speakers: www.froogle.com, www.ubid.com and ebay. Thanks but looked on Crutchfield already and they had three models for sale....all $100 for a pair. : ( I'l;l check those other sites out, thanks Smoochknob.

I did the obvious thing today and went to the GM dealership, asked what they;d charge for a replacement speaker. They said $45 for one and I can buy them individually. That may make sense since the other one still sounds fine. Then if I want upgraded sound I can always replace the smaller and cheaper front 3 inchers mounted in the dash which are much more widely available.

To be honest, what I do is go thru Crutchfield, find what I like, check the stereo shops to see how it sounds, and then look on ebay and buy it for a third of the price. I've built a pretty good system for my '03 civic si off that premise and installed everything myself. Aftermarket speakers will sound a helluva lot better than the stock ones even without an amp or an aftermarket deck.
