You could at least tell us where you live.

Car prices are quite different in different countries. In Finland you have to pay lots of extra compared to germany.

Doesnt matter what country your from I would probably say some sort of civic or corolla. Honda and Toyota are still doing good things these days.

Call me an ignorant american but what nationality have to do with a decent reliable vehicles these days? Im guessing there are some european taxes based or importation of certin makes of vehicles, right?

I've had many discussions about car prices with americans. They were stunned after I told few examples from our car prices. So it does matter.

@BDD - I guess so, but a $ sign doesn't make him a yank. I wonder when people realize to post more details while asking something.

Reason I know he's a yank any other nationality would have said what country they wear from i.e Hong Kong Dollar and not have been as single minded as to say Dollar

you can get most cars for that price that are about 3-4-5 years old, but the miles are all way's going to be high, which means one thing, there all going to run the same, like shit, some cars might be very reliable like japanese cars, but after so many miles all materials wear, but so -- i'd say your best bet should be something that was born reliable even though it could still be crap, just don't forget to test drive the hell out of it

Pre-owned Maxima, Camry, Focus, Legacy, Civic, Accord, Some Kia's, Some GM's........

Check Consumer Reports latest copy....it's the car buyers issue.

I recently sold a neighbors kid our 98 Maxima GXE loaded w/ 94k, auto, superb condition, new tires, brakes, for $4200.

Car was bought new. Car was serviced and kept in superb condition and still had transferable extended warranty which is good until 8/08 or 125k or whichever comes first.

Many times a private sale can save you a lot of $.

Good Luck.

and ofcourse mileage is a big difference between cars and countries... 100,000 miles in the US is nothing...whereas in europe it may take you a few more years to rack that up.However when i buy one with higher mileage i always try to find out if it's highway miles or city driving... 30,000 miles worth of city driving (1-2 miles per trip) or 100,000 miles highway driving (50 miles per trip) the one with the 100,000 mileage is better off.

City driving is one of the worst things for an engine , when the engine is not on operating temperature the wear and tear on a engine is aprox 8x that of an engine at temperature...in short drives the engine can never reach it's temp and in such teh wear is alot higher with alot lower miles on the clock.

Honda makes a very durable engine , it's not an exception to see one with 300,000 miles on the clock and still running fine.
