I just bought my car last fall (used car) and the ac needs charged. Instead of taking it to the mechanic and paying over a hundred bucks for a 8 dollar bottle of charge i decided to do it myself. I just have one question. Where is the low pot so i can put the stuff in it?

Usually it is the larger of the two hoses in the A/C system. But you should ask a mechanic to verify it. Putting freon on the high side can cause serious injury should the can containing the freon explode.
Pretty easy once you find out which side is the low side.

You will be fine just go to a local A/C shop and ask them. They can tell you in a jiffy.

Could punch the make and model of the car into google and see if you can find an online service manual. Just a thought.

*edit because I can't spell*

It is really not a good idea to try and attempt this yourself.. you need to find out which refrigerant to use probably R-12. It is illegal to do this without a license. Also usually there is a reason that your a/c has no refrigerant...a leak. So I would really suggest not doing it yourself....however if you are that determined you can try looking online for a diagram.. or go to yor local library and get the haynes or chiltons book for your car..

BTW...what kind of car do you have?

make
model
year
engine size

The limited experience I have with auto a/c tells me that the recharge canister/hose will only connect to to correct inlet. There should be no way of hooking it up wrong. But I have been wrong before!!!

I hope you mean refrigerant, not coolant. Please do not pour coolant/antifreeze in there. This has the potential to be disasterous, so i would definately look into getting it done. Try getting the ac system tested for leaks. it's a simpe pressure test and shouldn't cost much at all. Pointless to fill it back up just for it to leak out again. You most likeley have a leak seeing how a 2001 shouldn't have used up all the refridgerant that fast, but i guess that depends how much you use it. I don't think a 2001 uses R-12, but I could be wrong.

2001 will use 134a for sure unless someone tampered with it and put r-12 in it

check that site out. also when you go to recharge most cars are set up to the recharge kit you buy, the adapter will only fit one of the fittings on your a/c line. I think someone mentioned that earlier. but if i were you to be certian i'd go to your local auto parts store and have them show you where to charge it. i know autozone and advance auto parts will do it for you

I usually put on something low cut and flirt with a mechanic and he'll do it for me for free.

....as bach said......if there is a problem in the ac system....then first it must be troubleshooted....the first step is too insert a dye into the system with a partial charge....use the a/c for a couple days and then check for dye leaks in the system....if none are present, then it is ok to recharge completely.....i must stress that this is in NO WAY A DO-IT-YOURSELF TYPE OF JOB....i am a mechanic but i would never try this without proper tools and safety...

man i hate that...because it works every time for me.....like when april's windows wouldn't work.....she put on her smallest skirt and top and then got me to fix it....i cut myself many times as she stood over me and watched....it was quite the effort to focus on the repair and not april's hot body.....in the end i fixed it and she made me pork chops fer dinner!.....too bad she totaled the car a week later or so....sorry babe...can't do bodywork!...
