Only at an event like the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit does the 2007 Audi S8 get passed over with a mere mention. Granted, Eva Longoria was said to be roaming the halls of Cobo, but come on people, this 450-horsepower sedan is equally enchanting.
Yes, that’s a bit of a stretch, but there’s no denying that Audi’s biggest sedan, when combined with the S treatment, is a car lover’s delight. Under the aluminum hood is a 5.2-liter V10 that works in concert with quattro all-wheel-drive to thrust this luxury ride to 60 mph in only 4.9 seconds. A six-speed Tiptronic transmission, borrowed from the A8 and tweaked for application in the S8, delivers power to all four wheels, with 40 percent of the juice going to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear, allowing for a touch of tail bias that driving enthusiasts prefer. An adaptive air suspension, tuned especially for the S8, controls the ride, and 20-inch cast aluminum wheels fit with 265/35 rubber are stuffed into the wheel wells. Cornering has also been improved over the A8 thanks to a tighter steering ratio, while large ventilated discs are standard stopping equipment. Available as an option are ceramic brakes, which are heralded for their fade resistance and durability.
In addition to the requisite badges, the 2007 Audi S8 is available with a power closing trunk lid, automatic tilt-down rearview mirrors, heated rear seats, a navigation system, and premium leather on the seats and center console. LED daytime running lights are standard, while a 1000-watt, 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system is optional.
The 2007 Audi S8 will be launched alongside the 2007 Audi S6 during the latter half of 2006.
