They just passed something through the legislature here yesterday mandating biofuel development. I'll have to look at it to see the details. I just saw a blurb. This could be big political fodder here in the US.

Hmm. Something like that has, in fact, been created by the auto industry.

It's called a "diesel car." Any diesel car can, in theory, be run with vegetable oil based bio-diesel fuel that consists of about 99.5% of vegetable oil and 0.5% alcohol (metanol or etanol). The fuel has an energy value that is about 10% higher than fossilic diesel fuel Therefore, in theory, it is possible to get 10% more horsepower, or 10% better gas mileage, out of the same engine.

At the same time, new diesel engines are getting more and more powerful, being able to outperform gasoline engines of the same size. BMW 535D is powered by a three-liter in-line six diesel engine with two turbochargers, and goes from 0 to 100km/h (0-62mph) in 6.6 seconds - with normal diesel fuel. And the car is, of course, a lot more economical than the gasoline powered 530i.

I was thinking of getting a bio-diesel kit for my future car.but this is great and it's big fuck you to oil companys. And it's fast! but bet you if bio-diesel takes off we will still get taxed heavy on it

Ironic that we're starting to get diesel engines running on vegetable oil don't you think?
When Rudolph Diesel first designed the engines, his idea was that they'd run on coal dust or vegetable oil - then the petrochemical industries had a better idea - let's use the cheap waste oil left after we've produced our petroleum etc.

Now, do you think the governments and oil companies are going to let you get away with using chip pan oil without paying? Think again people

In Finland, bio-diesel has the highest fuel tax. But it's still gaining a lot of interest, and chances are that the tax will be lowered. Especially when the emissions are a lot lower with bio-stuff.

diesel fuel in america is as expensive as premium gasoline (92+ octane)

A few Bio diesel pumps are popping up around the US, but not sure of pricing... I know it's not expensive to clean the vegetable oil to use for fuel.. and most diesel cars have little to no mods to make them run on biodiesel.

So far IMO it's the best fuel alternative.

they have been dicking around with electric cars since the 1920's and now we have the prius... not many advancements in that area.

If this catches on it could be the crapper for GM. I read that they have spent quite a bit of R&D on hydrogen. It would be good for Kansas & Missouri. Before long we will have the Sultan of St. Louis.

From everything i've read, hydrogen is a pipedream. There are so many challenges and flaws at this point it is becoming more unfeasible all the time. i figure that was just the opiate to the consuming masses of choice for a while, so we could see some light ahead in this age of price gauging.

From what I understand Gm is producing cars that run on alcohol in Brazil..

Running on corn.

Works for me. Their building a biodiesal plant a couple counties over from me. I thought it was cool in the article that some of those kids that built it were dropouts. Showing that kids can do something with their lives even when they don't do well at school.
