i think it might be real, they do drop away before they ignite, otherwise the wing is subjected to thousands of degrees of heat. The cameras are always there, to release the picks for publicity reasons, and for those down below to have visual confirmation of whats happening above. And finally even though it isnt easy to fire them by accident, there are automatic firing procedures, for example our british ones will fire automatically if it pics up a small enemy radar, this caused a problem when a policeman tryed to capture the speed of a fighter with his speed gun!
