Why is it that when you download some videos from the net, some you can scan/fast foward through and some you cant?

I've only noticed that with a few videos. I don't really know why that is though.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It usually happens when it's a porn with a lot of dialogue and I am trying to get to the action

Oddly enough, Windows Media Player does this better than VLC!!

Because the vid isn't encoded to allow it. AFAIK the only way to fix it is to re-encode/index it

when you code/re encode a video, you usualy set the number of key frames you want to use
more keyframes, more KB
that is the reason why sometimes you click on the progress bar and you dont exactly go to the place you cliked but a few seconds before. It looks for the last key frame from where you clicked,
it makes sense what brownell says, maybe those videos have no keyframe but the first frame.
It happened to me a lot on windows watching WMV files, never saw it happening on MPG or AVI.

There are some codes that doesn't even support scrolling, this could be by design or one of the older formats. Microsoft is well known to enforce this kind of things on streaming media or even local files.. WMV/ASF is the perfect example of that.

Sorry I didnt get back to you sooner, but yeah as my brothers up there said some programs don't allow scrolling or fast fowarding.

I have noticed that on vids I've downloaded from other places too, professional ones. But after I downloaded the k-lite codec pack I didn't have that problem anymore.

You can get the latest version on their website: http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/
I use the Full version and if you install that you can play pretty much any movie or music that's out there with almost any player. I use mostly Windows MediaPlayer and VLC and it works great. It's a separate program but when you start a file that k-lite has to "interpret" it starts and runs simultaneously as long as the player is running and closes when you close the player.
