- pic B is pointed out as being the original one in the galleries but isn't part to that series.
- pic A is deleted (as it's a repost) but pic B isn't linked to the series beforehand.
- the series is now short one pic (pic B) that will most likely not be found again.

This can easily happen when moderating pics if 2 or more duplicates are found while reviewing a picture. The mod can then just delete all but one duplicate.
The problem is if some of the pics deleted like that were part of a series while the one remaining isn't, this picture will likely not be found as part of the series.
So if he has time, the mod should check if the pictures he's going to delete are part of a series and link the picture that will stay to this series (so that the series is still "complete" ).

This.

Thanks.

At the risk of Tarquin thinking I'm being argumentative again...how often dos this scenario actually come up?

I mean...if A was the repost, and thus the newer pic added to the library, how does it get added to a series that was uploaded weeks, months or years prior? And how does the newly added pic (pic A) get added to the series, but not the original (pic B)? It seems like that a least a couple of uncommon things have to happen for this scenario to even happen. 1) the OP has to forget to link pic B to the series. OR pic B was uploaded after the original series was. 2) Someone actually stumbled across the original series and pic A, but not pic B, and linked pic A to the series. Granted, I don't spend hours in the galleries, but this seems like a rare thing to happen, and trying to come up with a solution for a problem that doesn't really exist IMO.

More frequently than one might guess probably.

Eightball said earlier that there aren't any pictures deleted without some sort of proof. My guess is that frequently that proof comes in the form of people linking to the original picture in their report of the dupe so that the moderators can compare them (which I do, but I wasn't sure if that was standard practice or not - apparently some sort of proof is required as standard practice).

If some people, or many people, are doing what I do (and it sounds like it might be fairly common), then in each of those instances the mod has the duplicate picture and a link to the original, which they need to verify anyway.

So in those instances, they have both pictures.

Now whether this is representative of "many, most, some," of the reports or not one of the mods would have to say. But my bet is that it happens often enough that - since both pics are present in front of the moderator at the same time - it might be kind of helpful just to have a conversation about it and get some folks thinking about it.

Fair enough. I guess I just assume that the majority of members are just as apathetic about reporting pics as they are with contributing to the rest of the site. It would be interesting to get some input from Omuh, as he's the one the handling reported pics, just how often this is happening.

Yeah, I'd actually be curious to hear how many reports are made each day and how many of those reports are done credibly (with links or something). I mean the numbers are all hidden from our view and I don't think anyone's asked recently, so I'd be curious to get the lowdown on what's going on behind the scenes as well. That might help inform our thoughts and behaviors - for those of us that care about the site at least.

We were never mods at the same time, but I think it has changed a bit. You might have the original in front of you when you mod now. I think that more often than not, you won't. But you might.

As long as the picture isn't cropped, the system will find all the duplicates in the galleries when moderating pictures, even if the quality/size/colour aren't the same.

The great majority of reports about duplicate provides the link to the "original" yes

As for the reason for a picture to not be in a series, there are a lot of series that haven't been uploaded as a whole and thus you happen to have pictures from the same series uploaded several years apart. It's then hard to find them and link them on here ^^

The number of reports per day can vary greatly as most of the reports are often done by the same few members. So if one happens to go on a report streak, the number will increase a lot. I'd say, on average, between 5 and 30 per day.
The majority of them are correct reports and they mainly concern category changes, reposts or pros.
