Whats with the little white numbers?

When I look at the thumbnails of pictures I have up loaded there are little white numbers in the top left corner?
Im sure they have a meaning I just cant figure it out. Anyone want to fill me in?

I think that's how many comments each picture has.

lindros is right, a lot of people like to read other's comments

this way you can see if anyone has commented on it without going into the picture

Thats it. I just checked and the number on the picture matches the number of comments.
