Threads... how long do they last?

Do threads ever get deleted? If so... When? Why?

...And does one need to be a member in order to see photos in threads?

No, they're not going to delete, unless the material is something suspicious. But if the thread disappears, it usually goes to quarantine.

Uploaded pictures show only to members, hotlinked pics to everyone.
