Tarquin, you live in some sort of time warp eh? That was kinda breaking news back in January when it was released.
Whilst the technology is there I am sure Apple Inc. have got so many patents and copyrights around it that they wont be letting it out of their hands for a while ....
Vegas has had facial recognition kinda shit forever. So I doubt Apple can hold patents on the technology itself, just on whatever software they're producing now.
It definitely has some uses but it's also another deadly blow to privacy and I think it's a lot more bad then good. Imagine google having this attached to their image search (and they will at some point) and you could just upload a picture of your mom and all of a sudden BAM 100 images of your mom gettin gang banged in her college days.
Or you go to apply for a job and your new prospective boss uploads a pic of you to google and then BAM there you are snorting a line of cocaine off a strippers ass in a picture you didn't even know existed. See where I'm goin with this?
Bad BAD stuff.
Why the obsession of getting rid of duplicated posts ? I can see if the post has be duplicated within a few days and or a few months (3-6 months) then they should be removed, I've done it, but older than that... who cares. Many people don't sign in every day and/or view every pic. To a new visitor all posts are new and aren't dup's. Nothing's more frustrating than commenting, rating and saving to favorites a shot to my liking and then find it gone, presumably because it was identified as a dup..
Google's Picasa also does face recognition, but I don't see any way that you could use that on this site.
I completely see where you're going with this, Tarquin, and I agree that it's a good idea to merge the same gir's pics in the same group while deleting the ones that are EXACTLY the same pic.
Think of the sets that could be made by automatically gathering all the same girl's pics spread throughout the forums.
There are companies that make this type of software, the idea itself is not patented... there's also software that "reads" images too, like license plates etc. using the same principle.
