Requesting your routing number? The only time you should be asked for that is when you are at a bank, or at a State building. If a website is asking you for your routing number that is seriously fishy. I wouldn't.
But to answer your question: When you first setup a bank account, you are given starter checks (I'm a student too, and I've gotten them from both Wells Fargo and NationalCity.) Its listed there.
and you can just call your bank. they'll check your name and social security number and you'll have your routing number without any problem.

Using a debit card is similar to writing out a check. In order to process a transaction, they need an account number and routing number. It's not unusual at all. When you use the card at a brick and mortar store they don't ask for that info because it's already on the mag stripe.

The only time I've given out routing # is for paycheck direct deposit at work.
I still think its extremely fishy.
also if you card doesnt have a visa, mastercard, etc symbol on it the it like doing a electronic check by phone there for you would need the routing #.
