Possible future site feature?

I was thinking the other day that it would be really awesome if the site had a web based chat room set up for special occasions such as the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Finals, World Series, etc. Obviously you wouldn't want it to be up all the time because it would possibly take away from the boards. Some times live chat would be ideal for an event like this if you are stuck at home with no one else to really talk to while watching the action (or if you are pretending to spend time with said people and are really ignoring them ).

Hell, this could even turn into something cool like a monthly "Meet the Mod" thing where you can have a live event to chat with people. I think this could be a pretty sweet idea if done in moderation for special occasions.

Seems like a natural next step, sweet idea, but that would probably need its own server?

I don't like talking to people.

I would support and attend.

Hell, I can even set it up if you want.

It's not hard. Let's start with an IRC chat and see if it has any legs.

That's kinda what I had in mind at least to start on short notice for Sunday. That'd be sweet.

I'd be up for that. We could even take it to the next level and involve webcams and audio. MSN or AIM can handle that I think.

WBW has/had an IRC channel and it failed.

I've tried on several occasions (as recently as last week) to host a live chat room for WBW and it just wasn't popular. People prefer to use MSN or other messenger.

If I was into watching the superbowl or other event, I'd rather devote my time to watching it vs chatting with a bunch of pervs.

So be it. If it failed, it failed. Feel free to lock the topic then. Only thing I can say is that if it were better advertised, people would be there. You can't bury something like that in a thread somewhere and expect people to show up. Had I seen a note about it on the homepage you can bet your ass I'd have been there, but I had no idea a thing like that even existed for this site.

i've never been to a chat room.

i'll be at a superbowl party at a friends house with 40-50 other people.

they probably wouldn't be too thrilled if i borrowed their computer to login here.

Im not sure I would like that here, only cause I kinda like the lack of pressure to respond immediately. I guess it wasn't a bad idea for events though. I too usually like to pay attention to the event without typing. I might miss something good.

I was going to say the same. I figured you were just trying to get my IP addy so you could track me down and rape me or something. That was the main reason I didn't use your chat.

I saw the link you had on your signature, I was interested in it, but thought if I clicked the link it would just take me to a gif of a jar breaking in a guys butt hole or something like that, so I never clicked on it.

I like the idea of a chat room, I'd use it.

I have been programming an ajax-based chat for another project.. but never got around to testing it in the wild.
