Merging Dupes

I realize we get a lot of dupes that the mods have to go through. When a dupe is spotted, you guys delete it. That's cool.

But when one is found on the site, it occurs to me that someone has rated it, someone has tagged it, someone has favorited it, and someone has left comments on them - in almost all cases.

So what if rather than deleting the dupes... We "merged" them together? I can't imagine it's terribly hard to program. Time consuming perhaps, but not hard.

Have it add the votes together and average them out. Have it add all the comments in together in chronological order. If the picture is in someone's favorites, have it automatically update that person's favorites with the new URL (if any).

Still remove credit for the dupe. Only give credit to the original uploader. Make sure it's programmed so that the original uploader still gets credit for the pic and the ratings, and make sure the older pic is the one that's kept.



I know that a lot of times if I see a dupe on the site here, I am often able to report and can include the URL to the picture it's a dupe of. Not always, but often. This not only guarantees that the pic is a dupe (because I presume the mods can verify my claim that it's a dupe since I include the link to the pic it's a dupe of), but it would also allow for "merging" a picture instead of deleting it.

I absolutely get irritated as shit when I have a girl in my favorites and then go to view my pics, and she's gone with no sign of what happened to her. I know it must have been a dupe (in most cases), but I'll be damned if I can find the original.

Would it be possible to merge pictures instead of just deleting the dupes? If programmed correctly, it would also save the mods time and trouble by demanding that the older picture be the one that's kept as the primary when the two are merged together.

Is that something you guys would be interested in doing?

That's a very good idea!
It would address the amateur dupes but still would leave pro or removal requests at risk of never being seen again.

Well, not until someone uploads them again.

I don't know anything about the programing aspect of it but it does sound like a good idea.

Although, when I spot a dupe I don't always know where the other is BUT I know it's a dupe so I delete it.

If I'm thinking correctly, in order for it to work we would need to know where the others are, if not then it doesn't serve much of a purpose.

How about deleting the duplicate image, but not the comment(s)? The mod could post a reason and /or a link to the original. If a link to the original is provided, you could edit your favorites accordingly.

As JAWZ pointed out, I see a lot of dupes but I have no idea where they're located. I don't get paid enough to go back and find them.

I'm sure the mods love when someone comments REPOST but offers no evidence.

Yeah, that'd work. That way people could find their old stuff.

TK, I have thought that many times myself. That's why I do my best to include a picture number if I can. I can't always do that of course, but I try.
