Idea about the chat server

Ok I know I posted this at the end of the chat server sticky thread but I thought if i posted it in it's own thread it would allow more people to take notice of the chat server or throw an idea in that would help with traffic.

Just a thought. If you want more traffic in the chat room (would be nice seeing as how I am always stopping by then leaving cause nobody is home) then I have an idea. Is there a way to show who is in the chat room +/- a few minutes as real time chat and refreshing the WBW webpage to sync with the chat server would be taxing, any way if you could show who is in the chat room maybe people would join seeing others in there, I know I would. I got this idea from my clans webpage as we have a TS (TeamSpeak voice chatting in real time) server and you can see who is talking and in what room they are in or what game they are playing. Screwy let me know and i will send you the link to the clansite so you can take a look.

its an unofficial chat for wbw, screwy has set it up on his own... so that would be something that would have to be taken up with the wbw website owner, diz

ill move this to the feedback section so he can take a look.

Voice chatting isn't a really suitable option unless you're up for strong accents, mispronunciations, and clutter. Plus it also requires a suitable amount of bandwidth.

But as to the whole being able to see the current online members. Using IRC, there are plenty of Perl gateways that could be used inconjuction with iframes. But it'd be more suitable to make the updating method one sided. Rather then send like a regular retrieval on a perioidic basis, it would be far less bandwidth consuming for the IRC to update via Perl and send the data to the webserver everytime someone logs on or off.

Right. I never meant that WBW should get a TS server or chat server, that thought is actually kind of scary. Let's face it not everyone that is part of WBW should talk to poeple given some of the things they would say. Sorry if that came off wrong. I just know that as an SA (server admin) on our TS, I have banned people for being disrutping to others who are trying to talk and play games. Yeah you guys would have to employ a whole security force to just police the TS server.

Anyway I simply meant is there a way to show who is on the chat @ any given time so that others might be more inclined to join. Sorry for te mix up.

And thatnks for moving it to the feedback section, I did not look before I posted. It is a wonder I make it across the street sometimes.

i think that sounds like a good idea, although it may be more practical to have the status on the chat server . . . possibly a more informative frontpage . . .

kanzen does selective reading. clearly the point was just about having something that told who was in the chat.. not having a voice chat.

I'm sorry I don't know what those are (will hit the link though). My computer knowledge is updating server info remotely (moderating our site and other stuff) some html, Invision power boards, Unreal portal (whatever that is), Trillian, Xfire, TS, setting up game servers and I built my rig.

Other than that like other chat stuff or programs for running forums and webpages or Linux servers and knowing what dvd software and codecs to look for, I AM LOST!

So go easy on me.

Hey! I like our boards. They serve their purpose and show some good stuff. Of course Winters and Automatic play hell with them. I am sure there are better boards but oh well. Can I post the link and you tell me what you think. Or PM it to you.

And ETV don't hijack my thread

We mean on the WBW main page so you do not have to start the chat page.

hmmmm....yup....im still a mod...........

*shrugs*

alright.....i post my witticisms elsewhere

(offtopic) trust me scott, i know the upper midwest accent, i live in minnesota.

ONTOPIC- look at the status in the upper right corner, it tells you who is on.
if we make it an OFFICIAL chat program, im sure diz would be able to show the current status of members in there. since its unofficial.....well, its just that, unofficial.

mildly(offtopic) it seems to me that when there are huge MSN chats, and people in the unofficial chats, it detracts from the WBW forums....people talk there instead of here. and that sort of sucks. /social commentary
